I heard something yesterday that was really interesting and wanted to share it here. The story goes like this:
Many, many years ago a terrible thing happened. There was a 2 year old girl, and her parents received dreadful news about her. They were told that she could not hear, she could not see, and she could not speak to them. They had to be devastated!! They would not be able to tell her bedtime stories or sing lullabies to her, and they would not hear her say "I love you", in that way that melts a parents heart. By this time in the story, we all knew the little girl was Helen Keller. What a remarkable woman she was!!! What if.......her parents had been able to glimpse into the future and see "the rest of the story". If they had known what we all know about Helen Keller's life and how many people she touched....how her life affected so many people in such a positive way......their outlook could have been so much better!
That story reminded me of the news we all received about our babies having Ds. For many, it was heartwrenching news!! I remember being so so worried about Emily's future. I've spent a number of sleepless nights over the past 12 years. If only, we could just glimpse into the future and see that our kids are going to touch many people and accomplish so so much!

Great thought! Can't tell you how much that hit home with me.
Maggie has to travel to MCV (Medical College of VA) Wednesday for the start of her evaluation for a cochlear implant. Her hearing loss has given me more sleepless nights than DS by a long shot.
I needed that! Thanks Susan!

What a wonderful thought. I know that my daughter has touched many lives and continues to teach us things that are so valuable. In no way did I think when my daughter was born that I would have such a positive reaction from people as I and my daughter do. I know one thing that I have learned that really stands out in my mind....and that is PATIENCE. ;D Thank you for sharing that thought with us!
God Bless!

Susan...that is a nice post...Helen Keller is indeed an inspiration.......BUT have you ever thought that maybe the reason your Emily has turned out so well is that you COULDNT see into the future?
Dont you think since you had no idea ...and still dont ...whats ahead...you have worked your tush off with and for her.? Just like Helens parents....we forge ahead despite all odds....and look at what we are reaping!!!!! Helen Keller got great press ...but we are all parents of unsung HEROS in my book!

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us. Helen Keller SUSAN this is what I get from you post girl :-D I think one of the GREAT things bout UNO is that by all sharing in a way its a look into the future some From what others have found and experienced and for me at least, I can say its brought the stress level way down and more time just to enjoy Chris as I did with Kodi ;D YES, I will continue to work hard with Chris but also have learned that there is tons more to Chris then just therapies and ALL my fears have been just a waste of time. To me the UNKNOWN is the biggest fear of all, but by seeing what others have done and accomplished has truly eased much for me I shared your post with Colin and he has always been one to think that way but was happy that you reminded me, " that our kids are going to touch many people and accomplish so so much!" and I am sooo thankful that in this day and age we can share our experiences to make life easier. My bet is Helen Keller's parents would have loved that too, if available at the time to see a flicker into the futrure CC

CC~ I really hate to admit it, but I don't remember that much about what I learned about Helen Keller from school...other than the fact that she had a very important person in her life who helped her succeed, and changed her life for the better! (Anne Sullivan, was it?) I know, in our own kids lives there will also be very important people who will help them along the way......family members, friends, teachers, therapists. I don't remember ever reading that quote from her, but it reminds me so much of my favorite quote from "The Sound of Music"......"When God closes a door, He always opens a window". So true!!!
Really.......this post, and my thoughts were not meant to be about Helen Keller, as much as just a reminder that all the things we worry so much about rarely ever come true! I do think that if I had seen Emily and her life now....way back when she was born....I would have been encouraged, and might not have worried so much! I guess that's a silly point, since we really CAN'T look ahead, and probably shouldn't look behind! One day at a time is the way to go, I suppose!
Jackie....interesting thought! If you are saying that by seeing into the future, and knowing that Emily would have a rich/full life, I would have pushed her less, worked on her goals less, etc.....I'm just not sure. I agree so much that our children are often unsung heroes!! Thanks to everyone for the comments. Susan

Susan,
I read Helen Keller's biography and I found out some things that were very interesting. Did you know she went to college? She studied very hard on all kinds of topics such as other countries and had various people who helped her along the way of her education process. She was a writer also. I even got to hear her speak on the radio once. It was great! She traveled all over the country and to other places in Europe. Helen was a curious person and loved to learn. She also liked to read. Helen Keller was a true inspiration to me and I really admired her for her work and what she did. Consider the time frame of her life and what she had to fight against. Yes, I think I understand now. I don't have too many hero's these days, most of my hero's have passed away. Besides my gramdmother, Helen Keller is a close second. Of course there is Chris Burke! ;D
