My name is Deanna. My brother Dean is special to me because he has Down syndrome, celiac disease and is my only sibling. He is almost three-and-a-half years old and is really cute. He loves French fries, spaghetti, country music, books and "Elmo." He really likes bubble baths, which is why he takes two per day. He also uses sign language. Sometimes I say that he has cutie syndrome instead of Down syndrome because he is so cute. He has speech therapy three times a week, after pre-school. He has had a couple of surgeries but has recovered. He goes to school on a "special needs" school bus with a lot of other children who also have special needs.
I have met a lot of kids my age who have special needs or who have siblings with special needs, because my parents and some of their friends have started a support group for families that have a loved one with Down syndrome. My parents even met some people who live really far away from me. Some are in the Special Olympics and I have met some famous actors and Presidents of the United States. Some kids live right near me and I wouldn't have even met them if Dean were not born. My brother is very important to me and he always has been since the day he was born. One time I left for a weeklong camping trip and I missed him so, so, so much.
Most of the time when I tell people that my little brother has Down syndrome they don't understand, so I like it when I meet siblings of kids with Down syndrome because they do. Some people think that it is really cool that my family knows sign language, even though 1 only know the basics. I have grown closer to my friends because of my brother and they love him almost as much as I do. My brother Dean is very special.
