Sarah has always loved her baths and never had a problem when I washed her hair. She got ear tubes last month and it seems like her fear of water started soon after she got tubes. She hasn't had any negative experiences with water but suddenly she is terrified of getting water on her head. She absolutely freaks out when I try to wash her hair. This makes washing her hair almost impossible.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Help!
Chris

Chris - I don't know why Sarah might be scared but I know my kids hate having water poured over their heads (although Meghan has just started to like it). I have a long counter in the one bathroom w/ a sink at the end -- I lay Meghan up on the counter with her head at the sink. neck on a towel. I wash her hair there. You might skip washing her hair a few times and bring a doll in the tub and let Sarah wash her hair, all the while encouraging her and telling her how much the baby likes her hair washed. Or let her wash *your* hair...give her cups to play with and encourage her to dump water on her head or yours. Or put cotton in her ears and get one of those hairwashing visors (i have one, and meghan hated it, though) anyways...I know how frustrating it is - hopefully Sarah will get over her fear soon! hugs to you both. laurie

Chris,
Eric is like that too. Washing a "doll's " hair is a great idea...also maybe a "sprayer" on the faucet would be good...that way you can control the flow of water. Thats what we do...we wash Eric's hair in the kitchen sink. Much easier with the spray. Also, the ENT doc recommended we didn't get water in his ears, so we bought this "headband" they had at ENT's office. Its a stretchy wide band with a velcro closure that you put on like a headband...keeps the ears from getting water in them. They cost about $15. Good for swimming too.
Good luck! Dolly

Wow, that headband idea is a great one. I would assume Sarah might be getting water in her ears and the feeling and sensation is more than she can bear. It IS a wierd feeling, and to a young child, might be more than she can stand. My mom washed me in the sink until I was 5 because I would NOT go in the bath.. too scare.. and I was REALLY REALLY tiny for my age, so the sink in the kitchen did JUST fine so maybe try the sprayer like suggested, or a change of venue? I don't know how old Sarah is, but could you possibly stand her in the shower??? Sometimes my little two like a shower instead of the bath. We have a pull down, sprayer type shower head so it makes for an easy time to get them clean and they LOVE to play with it while I don't need it. Also, I can get in with them and control where the water goes... and their heads aren't getting submerged like in the tub. Good luck!!! A.

The same thing happened to Yosh and after a little while he got over it and loved his bath again. I didn't really do anything differently, except try to spend more time playing before washing. I think he just got used to the new feeling.
