Christine - I think you're going to be a wonderful addition to this board! you're already cracking me up. there's something about angelina jolie that i love too....but yeah she is a strange one. <br> Matthew would have been Emma Faith even though i love very Irish names, DH doesn't go for that because he's 1st generation German, with the last name to match :-D and he doesn't like the way they sound together....so Emma Faith was a compromise - but Matthew is a HE and not a she so Matthew Joseph it was...just about the only name we could agree on. God help us if we even have another boy, LOLOLOL!! Ofcourse, I tried to stay away from "top 10" names too but both mine were in the top ten the year they were born...and Emma is currently #2, so I guess that doesn't work, hunh? I also love Chloe Simone and Kellesimone (or Kelly Simone) - it's really the simone part i love, but the first names seem to work so well with that, Lol. anyways -- glad to have you here! laurie

Christine, Welcome to Unomas!! This place is full of wonderfull people and great advice. About the names....I have 4 kids and 3 of them were atleast 24 hours (or older) before they were named. With Collin my 3rd child that is chromosomally enhanced he was almost 72 hours before he was named. I was like you wanted a strong name but one that would show the angel I knew he would be. My DH wanted to name him Joseph and called him Joey but that just didn't fit and it stood out from the other to kids dramatically...since they are Griffin and Gray. After much proding...I won...He is definately a COLLIN !!! Keep us posted
Connie -- mommy to Griffin 8, Gray 6, Collin 4 and Lauren 2

I am very partial to "Kodi Lee" myself, LOLOL BUT I will share whatever name you pick OMG try and find one that is used on all the items in the store that have names pre-printed on them. YIKES I still hear about this from Kodi Lee, "WHY DIDN'T YOU GIVE ME A NAME that I can buy stuff with it on??" Geez and the girl is 15 and still on a roll bout that, LOLOL
HAPPY name picking ;D

Christine, I have so enjoyed your posts. Welcome and congratulations! You are so right about the need to educate doctors. I posted a message about my daughter on your first post. I thought I would let you know about how I found out that Sarah would be born with Ds. I was OLD when I got pregnant so my ob insisted that I go to the geneticist. I was 16 weeks pregnant when I had my appointment with the geneticist. I had an ultrasound that revealed that my daughter had an increased nuchal fold. The doctor said she had a 20% chance of having Ds. She wanted to do an amnio but I refused. My husband told her that our baby had an 80% chance of being "normal". As soon as I left the appointment and got in the car I had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to have the amnio. I called and rescheduled the amnio as soon as I got home. I was positive that my baby was just fine but decided the stress of not knowing was too much for me. I had the amnio and was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't painful. About a week later the nurse called and said they had grown three cells and we had a normal, healthy baby girl! I called and emailed everyone with the good news. A couple of days later, on my husband's birthday, the phone rang. My husband and I were both home since it was our spring break (we're both teachers). It was the geneticist and she asked if we could come to her office. I knew by the tone of her voice that something was wrong. I asked her why and she said she didn't think I wanted to hear the news over the phone. Duh!!! I made my husband get on the phone and have her tell us the news. Well, it seems that they didn't notice that there was an extra 21st chromosome when they did the karyotype of the first three cells. When they found the extra chromosome on cells 3-10, they thought she had mosaic Ds. They went back and examine the first three cells and found those cells were the same as the others. My husband was furious. I was devasated. We went to see the geneticist the next day and she talked about our options which were......first~abortion.......second~adoption.......and last~keep the baby. There never was a question about whether we would keep our daughter or not. Geez, she was our daughter! The doctor gave us a copy of Babies with Down Syndrome and sent us on our way. She wasn't as insensitive as other doctors but she certainly wasn't sensitive either. The thing that bugged me when I was pregnant is when some people would treat me like a hero for not aborting my daughter. I felt that God had given me a gift and I certainly never felt like a hero. When Sarah was born, many of the doctors didn't read my chart and acted like they were the first one to tell me that my daughter had Ds. I had known for five months already! Yes, doctors need some training! I think parents of children with disabilities need to write a book that should be required reading for all medical students! I have had so many doctors call Sarah a Down's baby or tell me that "they" are always so loving and sweet. Well, Sarah is very loving and sweet......sometimes. She can also be angry, sad and mean. I don't know why I am rambling so much! You have already come such a long way since you found out that your daughter has Ds. You will be a great advocate for all our kids. Chris

LOLOL Christine, see no one wants my names!!!!! Now I personally think Gabriella is a beautiful old fashioned name, you just keep running that thru your mind and you just may change your opinions, LOLOL! (I know, I know, fat chance!) Anyone want to use my names out there in uno land? Ever??? Chase turned 12 on the Fourth of July and we probably heard the word mongoloid about four times in the first year of his life. The last person to use it, an ER nurse, will probably never use it again as I laid the inappropriateness of that word on her a bit strong. I find older people are terrible about using it as it wsa from their era I guess. LOLOL, so you thought Chase and I wer pretty old hmmmmm?LOLOLOL, I was 35 when I had Chase BUT I was 41 when my youngest was born, can we say oooppps! I made sure that situation wont happen again, drove DH to the dr personally:D hugs, Robin PS I am so glad to hear you are weird, LOLOL, you will blend right in with some of us here, LOLOL!!! And they know who I am talking about:D Not only are we all moms and dads with children who have DS but we are great friends here who have lots of fun, only way to stay sane

Hi, Christine, Sorry to be late joining in on welcoming you to Uno Mas--home computer in the shop and hard to find the time at work. I'm in NJ too, live in Plainsboro, work at Princeton. I scanned through the posts on both threads but still don't know which Middletown you're in--looks like there are 3 Middletown's in NJ, 2 North and 1 South. I think there are at least 6 local support groups in NJ. South Jersey has BUDS www.buds-sj.org/ We hang out with one of the Central New Jersey groups, www.dsacnj.org/ Then there's 21 Down - Down Syndrome Awareness Group, Inc. Northfield and Central New Jersey Area Down Syndrome Support Group North Plainfield, Down Syndrome Congress of Northern New Jersey Upper Montclair, Down Syndrome Group of Northwest New Jersey Washington, and Down Syndrome Support System (DSSS) Metuchen. Think you can find them all through NDSS www.ndss.org/content.cfm?fuseaction=InfoRes.SrchRes&state=nj You might want to scout out one or more of these groups. See that others have already recommended sites and movies and books. I'd suggest you add Expecting Adam by Martha Beck and Choosing Naia by Mitchell Zuckoff to your reading list--not how to nor medical advice, exactly, but both good reads. And one other link, if you wanted to go finding a birth club, you might check out the Ds bulletin board on Baby Center, bbs.babycenter.com/board/baby/babydevelopment/11985Best wishes to you and whatshername, Bob

Hey Christine, joining in the "Name the Baby" competition from Ireland so you might find some of them strange (and NO I won't be offended if you don't pick mine).
Well Sarah has got to be my top girl's name. But love Emma too, Niamh, Tara ("strength"), Aoife, Ellen, Rachel, Meg, Caoimhe, Orlaith, Tina, Cliona.
K, now that I've added to the confusion I'll sign off!

Getting my dose of good meds this am and I see you like to name babies around here. Jenn, I liked some of your names, but some of them are duplicates of friend's babies and I don't like to copy. Some are just way to southern for a Northeastern baby. Sorry...I just can't. Robin! Did you notice the name Gabriella on Jenn's list? Maybe she'll have another and you will be able to name her baby! Let's see, hmm, Steff came up with Lexie which is my cat's name. You know I actually do know a woman who named her daughter after her cat - and that is only one of the reasons why she disturbs me. Christie came up with Zena which I have to say has crossed my mind a few times. Hmm do you think Carter's makes an infant-sized breast plate and matching armour? Oh and I was also thinking of Spaldine (as it feels like there's a little Super Pinky bouncing around in there) which would fit into your "stuff with name already on it" criteria. As far as my own name of choice right now "Lara" it wasn't shot down last night. Could there be hope? I think it's all going to come down to who's in the room when they come in with the birth certificate papers for signature. Bob...thanks for your input and hi. I knew there were about 3 Dover's in NJ but am quite surprised to here there is more than one Middletown. I am in the Monmouth County Middletown - where Route 35 runs right through it. Sounds like there's enough of a NJ crowd to have a nice gathering. You bring the marshmallows. Oh and Robin, I was not thinking you were old by any means...just that horrible term is as archaic as a volcano! You know I actually looked it up on Webster online...going to petition Webster to kick it out of the dictionary along with the "r" word. Grrrr. Ok, I think I'm back in business. Was feeling a bit low this morning...but your posts have restored a smile back to my face and now I'm back ready for a fight! Keep those names coming...I do like reading them! Please note Emma is a dead issue. Just now going to happen. Sorry, I liked it to! Have a great day all! Christine

Stellaaaaaaaaaaaa! Hi there...just caught your list. Don't worry about the Irish spellings - used to them. My girlfriend has a Conor and a Siobhan. Sarah is a favorite of mine too, but alas another duplicate - in fact one of my son Ryan's best friends. But my dear you hit something - Tara! Ah, Katie Scarlett...the rich red earth of Tara! My favorite, all-time movie! Gone With the Wind...where my sanity has gone. Hmmm, me like! It'll never fly with DH though. Tough being mostly Irish married to an Italian. I already lucked out with my son's name. How long will they give you before you HAVE to name your child? Thanks! Christine
