PHEW my girl does and she is almost 7. She has never put a puzzle together she still tries to shove the pieces in. What area of development is that and is there anything I can work on now with her to develop the skills needed to do puzzles later??? Thanks in advance!!! steff

Steff - I know we're not there yet but we're working on it.... can Liv do 'single piece' puzzles? like a square, circle, matching types (toddler wooden style?)...if not, start w/ those. then go onto 2 or 3 piece puzzles. i just got MM a set....its 4 puzzles, one 4pc, 6pc, 8, pc 12 pc. and a 2-piece puzzle...like half an animal each so she'll get the idea? i know it's hard for MM to get the tradiational puzzle type pieces (jigsaw) together....even the larger chunky size. i'd say just start small..and maybe try a puzzle of a character or something she really likes...strawberry shortcake, barney, kittens...something that will encourage her to put the picture together and one that has the pic underneath so she can match them at first. hope my rambling makes sense :-) laurie they're very cool - i got them at Marshalls for just a few bucks each. made by The Learning Journey.

That's how we started with Justin also we started with single puzzles then went from there we also used the puzzles with the wooden knobs, at first the bigger knobbed ones then smaller until he could do the red peggy ones.

STEFF Why I have noo idea but from the get go when Chris was tiny he was GREAT with puzzles, he just loved and still does doing puzzles. I really have nooo answers to your ?'s but when he was just in preschool we started with those huge puzzles you know, I am sure you have seen them. They are real BIG Puzzle parts kind of like a mat thing for the floor. Actually is how Chris learned his letters cause someone gave him a train puzzle thing, that went from A to Z, he loved to do over and over and over. Maybe Liv is just like me and just doesn't like puzzles, LOL you think ?? CC ~

;D hee hee maybe I should've explained further.. Okay here goes..... Olivia has been doing the wooden puzzles with the handles for her whole life. She STILL tries to shove the wrong pieces in the wrong spots and even if its the right spot somehow someway she never seems to have the alignment proper and tries to SHOVE em in any way she can. AND LMAO she LOVES LOVES LOVES puzzles... just can't seem to figure em out. When I help her she can but once I stop she just shoves the pieces in any direction. I dunno. I am stumped. We do the other puzzles which are not the handle kind occasionally cause she loves em but they are still simple and she hasn't a clue but digs on trying after all these years. Even her old baby ones with the handles she still has yet to master even though we have done em 50 billion times. Any ideas??? I DUNNO I hear of kids who do em young and Liv well????hmm.....Then again she can name every object and even point out the word I write under the wooden handled kind. Sheesh the kid can read em just not put em in there right. HUGS steff

Hmmmmm Steff, very interesting!! Emily has been very good with puzzles since she was about 3 years old, but her speech is not even close to being as good as Liv's. In fact, for many years during speech therapy, the ST would use puzzles as a reward for Em letting her do the oral motor exercises she hated so much. Perhaps it just has to do with the idea that some kids excel in certain areas and other kids excel in different ones. I've always been totally amazed by Olivia's vocabulary and articulation, and she is half Em's age! I know puzzles are supposed to be a great way to develop problem solving skills, so it's good that Liv likes to do them.......I'd say just keep letting her try them and help by talking her through it as she works them. As long as she doesn't get totally frustrated by it, I'd just keep trying.

Courtney is just like Emily.... She has always done puzzles and loves them! Now we still can't do 500 piece puzzles....mainly because once we get over 60, there are just way to many things in front of her! We started out helping her though. Telling her do it soft Courtney, Soft...Courtney....SOFT! lol....Then once she would get it in place we would let her bang her fist on it so she could make sure it was in place. She loves that! Get those huge life size puzzles....Courtney loves those. We got a HUGE Barney one from Walmart....and she hung it on her wall once she mastered it. Good Luck!

Kourtney still has trouble with puzzles, she gets the ones that are wooden with the knobs on the pieces, but if you give her a jigsaw type puzzles she has a hard time and usually gets upset..We are still working on it though..I myself am not a big puzzle person..So, dad who loves them likes to help her with that.

;D THANKS you guys!!!! LMAO SUSAN.... My girls idea of problem solving through the puzzle is pounding it in any which way she puts it. If it won't fit she'll MAKE IT FIT!!!LOL!!! Interesting though you guys. JENN!!! WOW that is IT!!!!! My little BARNEY FIEND!!!! She would LOVE that and using the word softly just may work. I do tell her to turn it a bit and she does BUT if its not just right when she turns it she'll try to POUND the sucker in. WHATTA great idea!!! THANX!!! My instant gratification kinda gal... LOL..... Ya know its funny cause I was wondering this when I saw a few kids with ds MUCH younger than Olivia doing these really neat puzzles concentrating sooo hard to get it just right. And they were GOOD then I sat Olivia down and she tried and tried and loved it but alas hasn't a clue even with major help. SUSAN THANKS!!!!!! She does have some good talking and articulation. GUESS WHAT??? She is reading!!!! Well she is reading books with basic words. Ya know the boy jumps. The girl swings. The dog barks. The girl runs. Now may not seem like much but I am soo proud of her cause this has started since the beginning of the school year. I was SHOCKED when she read her homework for me this morning(she told my sis who watches her when I'm in school on tuesdays that she FINISHED her HW and my naive sister believed her LOL) She had to read the sentence and circle the correct picture and she did it all by herself .

STEFF~ GREAT news about Olivia reading!!!!! She's off to a good start! In our case, Emily had early success and learned that reading was FUN, and it continues to be something she does for enjoyment. I hope that's what happens for Liv too. I like the way Jenn described it.....SOFTLY!! Maybe that will work. And Steff...LOTS of people problem solve by pounding stuff! Ok...not a great method with puzzles, really. We have TONS of puzzles, and I'd be happy to send some to Liv....but LOL I'm not sure I have a single one that actually has ALL the pieces!
