Keep Emily in your thoughts...I had to tell her yesterday on the phone that a friend of hers from high school and SO was found dead on the floor of his apartment....apparently from a seizure. He was her age and had not shown up for work for several days when they went looking for him.
Ruben had come to all of Emilys parties for years and was a really nice guy. I could tell she was pretty upset when I told her. I had called earlier and clued in Norine that I would be calling....and she suggested calling back in the evening because they would all be home.
This is her third friend to pass away since she graduated.....I guess having friends with disabilities means she has a group of people in her life that are a bit more fragile. I am sure we will have several conversations about it all....but at least Elvis is not a part of her life anymore. He used to "talk to the dead"....and was convinced some of them lived as 'zombies' in his attic....which often made for some interesting discussions when he came over....to say the least.
I am sorry, though, that she wont have the closure of going to the services....but I will just have to tell her about it all.

Jackie~ I know this has to be hard on Emily...especially since she is far away and won't be able to attend the funeral with her friends. I'll keep Reuben's parents in my prayers. Can't imagine anything worse. Susan#nosmileys

No....it wasnt Elvis who passed away...he is still very much alive...although not in our lives anymore. He developed some pretty serious emotional problems after a visit a year and a half ago to relatives in the South. There was some talk about some of his cousins friends giving him some mind altering drugs possibly that caused all this...anyhow....he is on such heavy doses of meds that he cant focus very well and make him pretty hyper. He just drops in every now and then.
The young man who died was another friend of Emily's.
But thanks for your concern.

In the book DIFFERENCES IN COMMON, the author describes her son's dealling with the death of a close friend... I quess it is inevitable, when friends have disabillities. But that doesn't make it any easier...

Yes he was in SO but these past few years was more dedicated to his jobs than his sports. I guess Emily is taking it ok...I cant seem to get her to turn on her cell phone so we can chat. Apparently she keeps forgetting to recharge.

Thats ok....CC....Ruben was disabled....not sure exactly what the nature was...fairly high ability level. He lived under the auspices of our local TPMHMR agency in a large apartment complex and had a roommate not as able as he was.
He worked at Walmart but had recently changed to the local chain of do nut Stops here.
He was a good employee and it was not like him to miss a day.
I guess the first day they phoned when he didnt show up and got no answer.
The second day....the woman who owns these and has recently started employing more people with disabilities...got concerned and went over to his apt herself (dont know if she tried to go thru TPMHMR and got no help or what).
They found him on the floor and discoved he had died two days earlier.
I cant tell you about the roommate....he did tell HIS parents on the phone that his roommate was sick and wouldnt wake up....but not sure of the rest of the story.
But just think about this ...in terms of letting go....this could happen to anyone of us or our other kids..... One of my daughters lives far away and I often wonder if something happened to her...how long it might be before I knew anything ..... Life is not without risk ....for any of us. Everytime Emily flies alone my heart pounds....but she always makes it....and then I beam......We all have to let go at some point in time or we willl end up making a reality of that terrible MYTH........Perpetual Children.
