Yosh's speech is by far the slowest area of his development. I'm getting him more therapy, but I wanted to ask if any of you could give me some ideas on how to get past babbling. Expressively, Yosh is more than a year delayed even though he seems to be understanding more and picks up signs quickly.
I'm thinking about buying Love and Learning, and I wanted to know if those of you who have used it think it would work with a child functioning at less than 1yr.

How old is Yosh ( i can see his date of birth but i know you write it differently to us in the UK so not sure whether he was born June of February
Hannah was born July 2002 and she just babbles too
she doesn't even sign as much as we try yet she will do signs to nursery rhymes
so i would also welcome any ideas ( not heard of that video either )

We haven't used the Love and Learning series but heard great things about it. For us we use alot of flash cards, even sign language flash cards. We also use alot of the Leap Frog things like the Letter Factory CD and the Fridge Magnet, they show the letter and then the sound all done to music which is great for us since Justin responds better to music. And yes we use the karaoke machine quite abit he loves to hear himself and then it gets even better when we put a tape or CD in it. We noticed alot more sounds being pronounced when we used the karaoke. His speech is still our major hurdle here also, he still babbles but he is putting 2-3 words together verbally and signing as well. We can actually make out more words but of course he is getting speech at school and privately and I think the double dose plus with the different combination of techniques between the two is doing well also.

Kerri, Unfortunately speech is one of the biggest issue for kids with DS (as I see my son and others). One of good things that I learned from Uno Mas was Love and Learning. It is helping a lot! Luke imitates almost everything from them (girls from video). Hope it will work for little Yosh too! Alice

This may sound odd BUT for us even with Chris being 11 what works the best for him in the speech area is "sign" My guy is a very visual guy and signing just seems to reimind him of the word I did want to add that a child with DS at Yosh's age, babbling is a very good thing , I think CC ~

Thanks everyone. I'm usually ok with Yosh's progress, slow but steady, but we had a speech eval and that alwalys makes me feel I should be doing more or something different.
Every once in a while I need a reminder that Yosh is on his own schedule and will get where he needs to be when he's ready, not when I want him to.

I agree with Christie that signing can really help to get the words out. My daughter is turned three last month and still doesn't really have any intelligable words. Her dad and I can understand a few but no one else can. She is really taking off with signing though. I think it is a great start to teaching her to communicate. I have posted several times about the Signing Times dvds but I wanted to remind everyone that they are wonderful! Sarah has learned more signs from watching the kids sign on the dvds than she has learned from any adult. You can order them at www.signingtime.com. Chris

Kerri, It seems that Yosh and Peter are very much alike. Peter was born Feb. '02 and babbles alot. He is starting to take off with signing, but it has been a long road for that. I also got the love and learning set and am not using it very much now. Peter is very opinionate (sp?) about what books he wants read to him and love and learning doen't have enough color or pictures for him. He usually screams when I try to read them to him. Hope this helps you, and there seem to be alot of us in the same boat. Amante

Speaking of speech I too am anxious on this front, even though Keeran is only 15 months. My SP recommends using alot, ALOT of facial expressions and gestures all the time. Like becoming Italian!! Also, using toys that do something that you want a word for. For example I have a toy toaster with toast and when you push the button the toast pops out...so I say "POP" when it does...then I will get it out and wait to see if Keeran will say POP. He has done it! Another note is my SP also says that Kiddos with DS process language from the right side of the brain instead of the left side and that is why motion connects them with words. Anyone else hear something like that. Finally, there was a great thread that helped me so much started on Uno mas last year on "speech under 1 yr old" I got so much great advice then, you may like to archive it. Blessings on you! Debby K

Man, I wish I could offer some advice but Russell doesn't even really babble yet BUT... I will say I LOVE the L&L stuff!!! We bought it when Russell was 3 and he loved it. We didn't get any speaking results yet but Russell is more delayed then most kids were w/DS at 3 in the cognitive area. We are going to buy a tape / CD player for him for xmas and start them again. We have the 1st 3 sets. We stopped doing the whole thing and think since his receptive language has improved dramatically over the past year it's time to do it again! I wouldn't worry how old Yosh is when doing the L&L. They say to start it out as babies so they soak it in so I'd say give it a try!!!! Also, I CAN attest to the fact that Reece was about a year old when we started the 1st set with Russell and MAN did that girl pick up on LOTS from it. It's funny, we bought it for Russell but Reece had WONDERFUL speech by the time she was 18 months from the L&L!!!!! And, she could site read at a young age too! A.

I am a little late to weigh in on this post, but I want to say that there is a light at the end of this. John is 5 1/2, and finally finally his speech has come. I went to college for speech therapy, and it just frustrated me to no end that I could not seem to help. However, slowly but surely, starting around age 4, he just began to say more and more. He is difficult to understand, but he has progressed just lately from only answering direct questions or telling me a need, to telling me what happened at school, or telling me what his brother has done to him. He has a long way to go, don't get me wrong, but his vocabulary has grown so much- and he is learning more about language works- the social aspect of it has always been hard for him- doesn't like to answer people who are talking directly to him-teachers, grandparents, aquaintences, ect. but that is even coming along. He still uses signs at time- just a habit that makes life much easier as he is hard to understand- as others have said, the sign language really does bridge the gap until they are ready to talk- Best of luck!

MeKyah will turn one on 11/12/04 and she babbles a whole lot. She say's 'da da, 'ba ba', 'na na' and on occassionally she'll actually say 'ma ma'. She started babbling early on and has been saying those words for awhile. She will respond, 'da da' when she first see her daddy but no one word sentence relating to something she wants or other expressions.
She is still not holding her bottle but has been saying 'ba ba'. We've tried different things and she'll just put in her mouth than drop her hands. Now she should be getting off the bottle but she's not good with a sippy cup. She like to bang it on her high chair and knaw on the tip. She will only suck a few times, that is, if I'm holding it.
Don't be surprise if I start another thread on this same topic a few months from now. She'll be having a speech eval next month so hopefully that will tell us something.
She's in a home daycare with no more than 5 kids(whom all have normal development) and she already have a best bud whom is two.
You guys start some good threads that will help me when Kyah reaches that age, especially preshool age with inclusion and special needs schools.
This is my first stop for answers and suggestions.
Thanks to all of you, Jeannette
