Ok, Andrew will only drink milk. That's it... milk. no water, no juice, no pedialite(sp) nothing. Since Summer is now upon us, I'm a little worried that if I always hydrate him with milk, he is going to become VERY large, kwim? He is already very healthy . I have tried to water down his milk but out of 8 ounces he will only drink it if there is less then 1/4 ounce of water mixed in . Otherwise, he just throws it. Juice he spits out right away and water he will take about two sips of before throwing it. Any suggestions on how to get him to take either water or juice? Just planning ahead for the hot summer months. Thanks! Trisha

Trisha, I have a similar problem with Betty, she WON'T drink milk, but will drink tons of juice !! Ian w/o DS is a huge milk drinker just like Andrew, won't drink nothing else either, maybe water if were are lucky !!
Have you tried nectar juices, they are a little thicker than juice, about the same thickness as milk to, also, he will still get his calcium in the nectar juices.
I wish I had more for ya, but I think we are in the same boat here !!

I know exactly what you mean! Milk is all Nicholas would used to drink, too! In our case, we just kept offering water, and finally he would drink it, and now LOVES it!!! ;D As for the juice, he didn't really like anything sweet. Like the water, we kept offering, over and over, and over, and over...you get the idea! At first, all he would drink was prune juice, because it wasn't as sweet (and it's still his favorite!), but you can only give so much prune juice or you have different problems on your hands! He finally did start drinking other juices after we REPEATEDLY offered them, and mixed half and half with water. Some people mix juice with water, anyway, because of the calories. But in our case, we were always trying to push the calories, so we got up to full strength as soon as we could. I was really worried about this before his surgery, because I knew that after surgery, they start you out on clear liquids. (water, juice. The stuff he didn't like!) Anyway, that was in Jan, at 21 mos, and for some odd reason, he drank juice and water like a trooper, and has ever since. That was when he learned to drink out of a straw, too, because they had those juice boxes in the hosp. So, anyway, hang in there, keep trying. You never know when they may decide they LOVE it. ;D

How old is Andrew? Can you give him skim milk? Matthew (my typical 2 yr old) would only drink whole milk but I kept watering it down bit by bit until he got used to 1%. Since he loves his milk, I'm happy about that...way healthier! Plus now I only have to buy one type of milk...way easier. LOL! good luck - laurie

I was going to suggest skim milk too. I have learned from 3 kids is they drink what they like. My oldest, Regan was NOT a milk drinker... at 1 yrs old we switched her to milk but by 2 yrs old she was done and over it and would never drink it again. I just supplimented her calcium in other ways and she would do juice and water. Russell loves milk and can ONLY have skim milk due to the reflux. But we had to take him off for a few years and he only drank juice and water. I too had to find creative calcium options LOL. Thank GOODNESS they finally put calcium in juices over the years! Russell now drinks milk again and he will drink juice and water, but I prefer milk. And Reece, my 4 yr old... ONLY drinks milk!!!! LOL... that girl LOVES her milk. She will ask for juice once in a blue moon but for the most part, is my milk girl. She will drink water though but sticks to milk... and the occasional sprite if mommy is being really nice (because I am NOT that nice at age 4 LOL). I personally would rather my child drink milk then juice. If calories/fat are an issue, try skim or 1 or 2%. Milk is a good thing, whole, skim or otherwise... calories included, so I would also suggest to modify calories somewhere else if you have to and leave the milk I would also just keep introducing different juice flavors and styles here and there... but if he only wants milk that is ok too! We ONLY do skim.... that is what all my kids had anyway. I know you are suppose to do WHOLE milk at age 1 but I have my own opinions about skim so we only do skim here. I love skim milk anyway so that is all I carry! Oh.. and creative ways for water intake? Try having him play with the hose on a hot day! LOL Or keep water around in a bucket, watering can, ect... I am sure the facination will get the best of him and he will try the water maybe! Keep a cup around outside too and pretend play with the water... who knows.. just might work if you don't do it like you are TRYING to get him to drink water! Good luck! A.

Thank you all for responding. I never even thought about it being a texture thing, such as giving him thicker juices or nectar juice. As for the skim milk, I forgot to mention that he will drink ONLY whole milk. But I'm going to keep trying, like you said, maybe he will end up loving it! Thanks guys!

Andrewsmom... are you more concerned he is not getting juice and water in his diet or are you more concerned with the caloric intake like you mentioned?

A.... I am concerned about both his hydration and calorie intake. Like I said, he is a very healthy boy, kwim? He weighs 28 pounds and is almost 15 months old. I have to laugh because when I give him a bath, I have to clean inbetween the rolls on his thighs! LOL!! But with the summer coming, I also want to make sure he is getting enough fluids but don't want to keep giving him the calories in the whole milk. Hmmm so maybe it is a calorie thing.

Wow he is a juicy little guy. MeKyah is 19 months and only weighs 20.7 lbs, maybe 22 by now. We were concerned with her fluid intake as well but her Ped said as long as she's eating more from the table and eating yogart and drinking, the drinkable yogart, she wouldn't be concerned. Fortunately she loves water and will drink juices well to but we limit only 4 oz of juice a day. She's doing a lot better now with drinking milk. Have you tried silk soy milk. MeKyah seems to like that better than whole milk. She's been on it every since she turned one. She's still not much of a milk drinker but we can get a couple cups in her a day. You may want to try drinkable yogart(made wl whole milk), yogart juice(55% yogart, 45% juice) or carrot juice. I also think it helps by her using the honey bear with the straw(from talktools.net) instead of a sippy cup.

one other thought - we used to "water down" yogurt (with milk...here you could use skim milk and he wouldn't know) to help Meghan learn to drink liquids from a cup. You could use lo-fat (2%) yogurt and skim milk, as I said - he might love that, and it would be lower in calories than whole milk.

my last edit didn't take for some reason....i was going to say, I know they already make yogurt drinks, premade, but i don't know what they're like fat & calorie wise.

Thanks so much for the great ideas! I am going to try the "watered down yogurt" since he loves yogurt already. It might just work. Thanks!

Just watch the yogurt - ever read teh sugar content in one - EEEKKK!!!! Those ready made smoothies can be the WORST! Youcoudl maybe try the carb counting ones. They use splenda, which I think is okay IMO. 28lbs? Holy cow! Carter just wieghed that at his three year check on Friday!

Not sure what kind of food he eats, but I know the babyfood has a lot of water in it. So maybe he is getting fluid in his food as well. Laura still eats mostly babyfood and drinks milk. I give her juice sometimes, but even when I don't, she has plenty of wet diapers.
I also have a chubby on my hands. Laura is about 23lbs. When I go to the gym, I don't worry to much about upper body ... I get that all the time LOL!!!
