ok... I'm looking for some help with signing. Andrew's ST only comes once a month and cancelled today. I have basically taught him all the signs he knows on my own from different websites. I want him to learn more signing and would like to get him a DVD but I don't know which ones are "good". So.... with all your wisdom out there I thought I would ask if anyone has a DVD they REALLY liked or that their kids really enjoyed. Any comments would be great! Thanks so much in advance! Ohh and also if any of you have tried Speech Therapy privately , did you insurance pay for it? Andrew has Early Intervention and was "given" this ST but as I said, I think he needs more. Not just for signing, I think he needs a therapist that will help him make sounds and actually talk. This ST has only seen Andrew twice and has only done signing. Any thoughts?

I agree, Signing Times!!! I posted about how well Nicholas is doing after only having the dvd's for just a month. And he LOVES watching them!
He was totally focused on them, you can't talk to him or try to get him to do the signs while the dvd is on, he just pushes us away! So I didn't know if any of it was sinking in or not, but then last week, he just started SIGNING all kinds of stuff on his own, AND saying the words with the signs!
So.....my vote goes to signing times! ;D ;D

hey there ! i have no wisdom on DVD's.....I used the book "Baby Signs" because they had the most general and commonly used words..... but I do want to say that you are correct in feeling slighted by your ST....Speak Up to someone at EI and tell them you feel that Andrew is not getting what you thought he would be getting. I had the same problem at the VERY beginning of EI.....Erin's therapist ( and we only had 1....who was supposed to be "doing it all") was ALWAYS cancelling and NEVER making it up.....I called my caseworker and told her I was disappointed in the EI......they made a change, got me a reliable PT, OT AND ST !! There was no "fighting", just an inquiry, a voicing of concern and luckily reaction....I am NOT at all an aggrevise fighter.....but as we all know.....if we don't stand up for our kids....who will ? Good Luck !

I am going to be getting the Signing Time video as well. I have heard great things about them and am looking forward to seeing/using them.
That is great that he is already using sign. We are just starting with Laura (this week). Her ST is not doing any sign or sounding words with her yet. Laura can say: mama, dada, baba and up (usually "mup"). We are working on the sippy cup and self feeding with the ST. We also only have ST once a month. I can call her anytime with a quick question and she always calls me back. Once we start working on sounds, I think we will need to up the frequency though. Laura gets OT, PT and DI each once a week, so I am in no rush to add more to the list right now ...KWIM?

We love Signing Time, too. Yosh picks up so much from it and loves the songs.
Check with your insurance company to see if they cover speech, ours does. Yosh's ST at school just reccommended we try a therapist from ITI, which you can find at talktools.net. They have all been trained by Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson, who is supposed to be fantastic. Luckily one of the therapists on the site lives nearby.

Thanks for all the help! I guess signing time wins! I just went to their website and I think we'll probably order the volumes 1-3 for now and see how it goes. Also, I'm glad to hear my feelings about his ST aren't too far off track. I think it's hard to know what to look for in a "good" therapist. I will talk to my caseworker and see what comes of it.
YoshsMom.... I am going to try to go on talktools.net now, thanks!

We are huge Signing Time fans! You may be able to get the dvds cheaper on ebay or yahoo shopping. Do a search before you order from signingtime.com. I think these dvds have taught Sarah more signs than any live human. She also enjoys the Talking Hands dvd but Signing Time is by far the best.
We have not been successful at getting our private insurance to cover ST. Sarah has a very average (I am being kind) ST at school but we have a fabulous ST through Community Mental Health. The cost is covered through a DD Medicaid waiver. We don't actually get Medicaid but these services are paid by Medicaid. It is not income based.
