Okay I'm starting to feel a bit like a guinea pig.....
JT didn't qualify for ANY therapy this summer through our school district because he hasn't demonstrated a loss....(no kidding is what I say, he just came out of EI in March when he turned 3 and I don't want him to show loss....duh!)
So, we've started a private therapy center and we're signed up for the auditory integration training which starts next week. Our little guy had to have an audiogram done today....not a pretty scene.....makes me wonder how in the world he's going to keep head phones on for a half hour at a time........
AND NOW, they would like to try some kinesio tape on his tummy. What in the world have I gotten myself into?! (Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that this center is willing to give some things a try, but I just don't want to put JT through all of this if it is fish oil.) They'll give me an information sheet on Thursday, but what I gather is that it is super sticky tape that gets stuck to kids bellies to help them become more aware of their respiration.
While we were waiting for JT today, a little 5 year old guy with DS was leaving and he just happened to show off his belly and I noticed that he had his whole belly taped up. So I talked to his Mom for a second and she thought it made him more aware of his breathing.
Anyone have any experience with this?

I have never heard of this either. But my thoughts went right to....How does a 3 year old keep that on their belly without pulling it off??? Andrew's too young but I know my other 3 kids at 3 years old wouldn't even keep a bandaid on for long! Don't even get me started on keeping a hat on! LOL! I would like to know more about it, such as... do they keep it on at night? Is it tight? Does it come off for a bath or swimming? Does it interfere with their regular breathing pattern? I don't know.... questions, questions, questions. When you find out more please post, I think it's interesting, not that I would jump right on the band wagon, but interesting.

Well, I just can't believe he didn't qualify for ESY type services... I'd revisit THAT issue next IEP... make sure they put it in THEN! Do they wait and see until the end of the year and then tell you he does or doesn't qualify?
I have never heard of the other tape stuff you are talking about.... I will be interested in reading more on it. Sounds odd and a bit funny if you ask me!

Becky you are soooo smart! Thanks for the link! I'll check it out.
A~ I know, I know.....I thought I was fairly IEP smart, but this ESY stuff didn't even enter my mind when he started school in March. So they got away with it this year, it won't happen again next year.
I'll make sure I let you all know what I learn tomorrow. Dawn
Andrewsmom~I do know in talking to the other Mom in the waiting room, that she said the part she doesn't like about the tape is that it doesn't come off easily at all. She let's it wear off before applying new stuff. Part of the PT program at the center is swimming and they wear the tape in the water.

wow....a first at Uno.....no one has heard of a therapy before !! I admit, I've never heard of this either....but I did check out the site. At Erin's school....sometimes she wears a weighted vest......or a velcro vest that is very tight....I think it is kind of the same concept....helps with sensory....gives her some input she may be seeking. I'm not sure Erin would put up with anythign stuck to her !! \ LOL !! When we go to the docs & supermarket & people try to be nice a give her a sticker....she gets it off as quicka s huymanly possible.....she HATES it !! LOL Then it gets stuck to her fingers & she can't get it off there !! LOL

Chester, Keep copies of beginning school year work for next iep, they said Haley wouldn't get ESY for the same reason, but our schools also take into account regressing and clearly 8 weeks out of a school structure she would regress, so that's how it's written into her iep.

Just thought I would share when Chris was a tiny guy OMG no way no how would he keep or even put the headphones on for his hearing testing So I went out and got a pair of headphones that plugged into our TV and I put his favorite video on and put the headphones on me and then try Chris and only kept it on him for a few then I did again and he did and BAM OMG he was fine with wearing them ;D Guess it was the favorite video and being at home he was more willing to try them and when we went back for the hearing test he kept them on ;D Anyway just thought I would share how we got Chris to keep them on One CAN get ESY even if the Child does not show signs of regressing, not always easy BUT can be done. We have it in Christopher's IEP and honestly that is one area he doesn't have trouble with regressing over the summer break. BEST of Luck with the therapies, very interested in the benefit you find from both CC ~

Allisa, I know what you mean about the stickers! The other day, my husband put one on Nicholas' forehead, just playing, because our older son LOVED stickers! Anyway, drove him NUTS! He was looking up at it crosseyed, trying to grab it but kept getting his hair, spinning in circles chasing it. He looked like a dog chasing it's tail! LOL ;D ;D We got quite a laugh out of watching him. I know, mean of us, huh? We DID take it off....eventually! ;D

When we were at the Chicago conference, we went to a session where the speaker was both a respiratory therapist and and physical therapist. She felt correct breathing affected our kids communication, thinking, and motor skills. She mentioned some kind of "abdominal wrap" that she recommended for alignment and abdominal breathing. She said its very much like what a professional singer would use. I didn't see what it looked like, but it kinda sounded like a light girdle that went just below the rib cage and ended below the hips. Maybe this is the same idea as the "tape"..................Dolly

Okay, so we're guinea pigs.....JT left therapy today with test strips of the tape on his tummy, just to make sure his skin won't react to the tape.
The handout sheet is pretty much what the website Becky posted. "Strengthen a weakend muscle by providing biofeedback information from the skin and muscles to the brain to increase muscle activation" etc.
Then it talks about how to get your child to tolerate the tape ie test strips for a short amount of time, working time up as you go. and then.....
"The tape is perforated with numberous holes to allow air circulation to the skin surface making the tape comfortable to wear. Kinesio tape is hypoallergenic and does not contain latex, therefore reducing the chances of an allergic reaction."
"The tape is waterproof and can be worn in the shower. The cotton fabric overlying the acrylic glue adhesive will absorb water. The cotton fabric will dry in approximately 20 minutes. Blot the wet areas dry with a towel or washcloth, but please do not rub the tape as this will cause rolling of the edges"
"Do not use a hairdryer to dry the tape once it is wet. Using a hair dryer may harden the acrylic glue making the removal of the tape extremely difficult and uncomfortable!"
"Tape comes off easiest when it is wet, remove tape in the direction of hair growth., etc"
"Redness under and around the taped area may occur and should resolve within 24 hours. This is a normal reaction as the tape is designed to increase circulation. Adverse reactions to the tape include redness lasting more than 24 hours or blistering of the skin. If any itching sensation develops beneth the tape, remove the tape immediately. A small percentage of the population is sensitive to a salt buildup caused by persipiration being trapped in the tape's glues. If permitted to contiune, skin reddening and irritation may result"
I wasn't in therapy with him when they put it on him. They said he didn't like it being "stuck" to him (He avoids the ladies at Wal-Mart too that hand out those smiley stickers). Once it was on and his shirt was back on, he forgot about it and hasn't fussed since. We leave the test strips on until tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.
There isn't much risk to it, so I figure if he tolerates it, we'll give it a whirl.
