well, we did one of my FAVORITE activities today(sarcasm)....getting Eric a hair cut. I haven't cut his hair in over 6 months...he looked like the "Little Dutch Boy". I have to prepare myself because its a BIG ordeal!! We went to the shop and the girl was very nice about the whole thing. I suggested that instead of battling him to get a little guy cut that maybe we should just "buzz" him. And thats what we did....he still fought like a WWF wrestler (so LOW muscle-toned...HA!) and I had more hair on me than a chia pet, but at least it was quick. And I gotta say, I love it! He looks like a big guy now...and his eyes look so blue! Daddy hasn't seen it yet...hopefully he'll like it too. If not, it'll grow back, but I plan on keeping it shorter. I'm just glad I got that over with. Maybe someday he'll like going to the "shop". Dolly

lol....YEAH right!!! Collin is now 5 and while better it is not something I Cherish and I only go when we just have to!!! Cuting Collins hair is very comical. After the boy has had a bath I sit on the toilet but him in a scissor lock with my legs and cut his hair. He really really doesn't like it. Then after about 20 minutes of this we are done and exhausted. I can usually cut his hair 3-4 times before we have to go to the barber and get evened up!!! Boy can I relate Connie

LMAO.... we do not go to the barber at all... we do barber ala Kevin and A! Russell too get his hair buzzed. If I try to, say trim his sides with scissors he starts freaking out when he sees the scissors! (no, I did not cut him and scar him for life!). So I can JUST imagine what some of you go through. I would LOVE a little boy hair do... but we stick to the military look MUCH easier... Russell loves the clippers because it vibrates and he tries to help.. or put it in his mouth LOL. Connie... sounds kinda like what we do to get the back of Russell's neck. LOL Talk about hog tieing! A.

Oh, isn't the haircuts AWFUL? My husband and I take turns taking him, because we both dread it and neither one wants to do it every time! I took him a couple weeks ago, he fought, cried, yelled, "STOP, STOP, STOP!" the whole time. It was AWFUL. As soon as it was done, I let him look in the mirror, he was all smiles checking it out, then the barber gave him a sucker, he smiled, said "Thanks. Bye" and that was that. He's always fine as soon as it's done, but doing it is torture. And his hair grows SOOOO fast!

Yup, the lovely topic of haircuts - that's exactly what brought me to this site many months ago.
Jason also gets the buzz cut - it's the only way to go. And, while I still feel like it's awful, I know now that it really has gotten a little better. How do I know? Well, when we took him to the doctor last week and he had to get blood drawn - let's just say that brought back every vivid memory of the first haircut I experienced with him. Four people to hold him down to get blood out of him. I, however, can now give him a buzz on my own and it's not as traumatic as it used to be. Still hates the back of his neck done though.
Sigh, this too shall pass - that's what I always tell myself when preparing for battle!

Haircuts are drama....My Darius is 6 and it was drama when it came time for a haircut. I recently found this reallly cool place for kids. Salon is called COOL CUTS 4 KIDS. They have tv's at every station so kids can watch a movie or play video games. It's pricing at $14.00 a cut. Worth it for me, I don't have to sit in the chair anymore and hold his head still...not sure if it's a franchise, for those in CA might want to look into it.

I can TOTALLY relate to this YIKES what a night mare cutting hair has been. Chris has gotten a little better as he will allow only me to cut his hair, not happily but he will allow me. Odd thing to me, from the first time we had to cut his hair, right up till now, he acts as if it hurts him Not sure what that is about Christopher's hair gets pretty long before I trim it but his too grows very fast as do his finger nails and OMG cutting them is a trip too CC ~

John-John's hair cuts used to be a JOY also. My friend who is a hair dresser came to the house, we put him in the highchair, strapped him in, & I held him down. He was almost 3 before his first cut. I just couldn't cut his curls off I got more hair on me then John-John did!!After many hair cuts like this, she gave me pointers on cutting hair & I began cutting it while he was in the tub. It was much better dispite the occational "no." Well the last time I cut it I must not have done it to my friends satisfaction. She was cutting John's DH & my hair & John-John was hanging around, so she says "let me just cut that little piece up front". Well he sat there for a whole cut without much figgeting. ;D What a boy Pat

So . . . of all of the previous threads/posts that have gone on with haircuts, has it ever been decided what exactly the problem is? I agree with CC, Jason acts like he is in pain. However, if we give him the clippers, he will buzz his own head without a problem. But, when we have to take over to fix it up and get the back of his neck, that's when all hell breaks loose. So, I don't believe it's the noise, but maybe there is still a sensory issue going on. Or, is it a control thing? We talked to Jason's teacher about this (she thought it was quite funny that we referred to haircuts as excorsims!) and she said that most kids with disabilities have this same issue - it's not just a Ds thing. Interesting, huh? I read somewhere that when it comes to sensory issues, they compare the feeling to chewing on tinfoil. It's that kind of a horrible feeling - not truly painful - but a very nasty feeling. Also, according to Brian, Jason used to be ok with haircuts until he hit about 5 or 6 years old, that's when things went downhill for whatever reason. Jessie

We buzz too! It's cute and cool in the summer. Carter is at the point where he does not fight or try to hide so much anymore, but he sits and cries like his heart is breaking beginning to end. We take him to a new place next to starbucks, so I promise him a frap after and it erases the traumatic memory fast!

I do have a girl but hair bows and barrettes stay in about two seconds and then they are in her mouth so we have to keep her hair short. She acts like someone is trying to kill her when she gets a haircut. We already go to a place for kids with a video in front of her face. We always put on The Wiggles or Elmo but it doesn't help. I mean, she is terrified! It takes both my husband and me to hold her down. I end up sweating bullets. I hate haircuts!

Oh my gosh this is too funny, I thought we were the only ones who had this problem. I have a friend w/a boy w/ ds Adam's age, and it isn't a problem for them, so I thought it was just Adam's fear!!!!!!! He also acts like it is killing him. When I ask him did it hurt? He says no, but I 've alway wondered does it hurt him???!!! Although when Jessie said like "chewing on tinfoil" I just cringed, just reading that.... Makes me wonder if thats what it's like for my little guy. The last time we went to get a haircut Adam told the girl he wanted it cut so he looked like "Bo Bice" from American Idol and Adam too, gets the buzz cut, when she was done Adam looked in the mirror and said "yep, I look just like Bo Bice" ;D The way he was beeming in mirror I think that is truly what he saw!!!
