Just got back from the NDSC in Anaheim. I attended a couple of workshops that dealt with Math and Numicon. Was just curious if anyone here has used it and if you would be willing to share your thoughts.

YES!!!!!I bought NUMICON for my daughter 3 years ago--- a LOT- enough to last several years and through all the studies of first grade. The theory is very sinple--- the idea is to give the child a visual image (visual as our kids are visual learners, remember) of amount. The plastic forms (colorful and strong) are made in such a way that is you put two pieces together, you can SEE the answer. We are still working on addition and subtraction to ten, plus I am working with her on identifying numbers to 100. If you ask why she isn't farther along? Well, the first year of school she got very little math and NONE with numicon, and the second year also fewer math hours than needed. Just this summer I am beginning to work fairly steadily with it. It is VERY important that the child be able to recognise the amount irrevevent of the color of the forms. When starting with the numicon, it is necessary to do a lot of work identifying forms blindfolded, making the same shapes out of pegs, etc. Two important points: they have excellent and clear instructions, and Ricki LOVES it. The work is varied into ALL SORTS of activities, and Ricki really feals like it is a game. Last year the school had Ricki counting numbers on her fingers and I was so peeved that they were doing that instead of the numicon. "Whats she going to do for sums over 10, take off her shoes???!? Numicon is designed to make that mental image needed for further math work. But it is not magic. It needs plenty of work and repetician. (but again, you child will agree as it is FUN!)
I just added two pics from 3 years ago to the photo album, showing Ricki using the numicon shapes and the pegs (which can be used together with the shapes, or separately, depending what the activity is... see also: www.downsed.org/publishing/dsra/numicon/and: www.numicon.com/
