One more question: Does any of your kids (with DS) are having or had music lessons? We start (me and my dh) teach Luke to play piano. We are having some success and sure some problems (he doesn't want to follow directions, he wants to "play" what he wants). If you have that experience, please share with us. Thanks, Alice

Alice, I don't know for sure if this would make a difference...but I've noticed kids will USUALLY listen better and learn better from someone who is NOT their parent, DS or typical. I tried teaching my older son piano when he was little, and just DID NOT work, and the same thing always happened when I tried to help with spelling, math, etc. But if someone else was helping him, it went a lot better!

NOPE no experience here with Chris getting music lessons BUT in his school they do have a BELL CHOIR and he was one chosen to participate and does very well ;D If LUKE likes and enjoys, I say keep at it girl, may take a little longer and have nooo idea if this would help but maybe LUKE can have a fun play time with the music after a certain amount of time you think he is up for under instruction. Just a thought CC ~

Emily took lessons for several years and learned well.....she was in recitals and did her thing nicely. She really would like to resume them I think...and learn to play pop music but...sadly...I sold the piano... She wanted to learn...was about 10 yrs old...and as I have said before she is a very quiet compliant person so was easy to teach. I wouldn't make ANY child take music lessons who didn't WANT to take them.....I remember thinking I would scream when one of my kids played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star ...ad nauseum....taking Suzuki violin.....that was before she fell on the violin and broke it into 100 pieces... ;D and the end of HER music career. Both of my girls love music, but we'll have to see whether or not they take lessons. If they show more serious interest later than I probably will enroll them but we will have to see. I play the viola, violin, cello and piano...so anything is possible. Same thing applies to other lessons...I did gymnastics and basketball mainly...whatever they want to do I'll do my best to help them do it the best they can.

Alice,
I'm a piano teacher. You say Luke is not listening and following directions. That seems to be a problem for some of my students. As a teacher, I typically ask my parents for their help at home with practice time to make sure they are practicing what is asked of them. I also address weekly during lessons.
I have one student with a type of autism and she has difficulty paying attention for any length of time. Would that be Luke's problem as well? Paying attention?
I combat that with a constant change of direction. We are all over the place during lessons, even playing with sidewalk chalk on my front walk when the need arises.
What is the teacher doing about the problem?
I guess what I'm trying to say is everyone needs to be involved in order to fix the problem not just Luke. KWIM?
