Hey...I am posting about a BOOK here that has a small discussion started in the Books section.
It is MY SISTERS KEEPER by Jodi Picout
I am posting about it here because as I finished it last night I realized it is really all about SIBLING ISSUES and FAMILY DYNAMICS when a person in the family has a disability or chronic illness.
This is the story of a teenager who has leukemia and her sister who was conceived to give her cord blood. Some will like the story...others will not....but I think it raises some important issues in how families deal with stress like this.
All too often when we have our children with DS we get caught up in the myriad issues of the diagnosis and tend to forget the family as a unit....and the fact that others needs still need to be met.
Most others have looked at this novel from the ethical point raised by attempting to conceive a child who will be a perfectly matched donor....but I saw it more as a novel about the dysfunction that can often set in when faced with these challenges.
I have recommened it also to Marnie...my daughter who does the SIBS workshops with the NDSC.

Jackie,
I am a huge fan of Jodie Picoult's books, and bought this book simply because she wrote it. She often tackles subjects that are a little bit taboo and thought provoking. I LOVED the book.

I read this quite some time ago and AGREE easy read I did find it a very sad book and for me not on my top 10 BUT worth the read for sure. Funny what drove me nuts was WHAT was that dog really for with the Lawyer, they surly kept you wondering bout that, least I thought so and I actually BEGGED Debi, who read it before me to tell me. LOL remember Debi and she did tell me and I was like THANKS now I can focus on other parts of the book ;D I am funny that way, I don't mind knowing things even before I read them, I know most Don't like it that way, BUT hey as with anything else, difference is what makes the world go round and I truly am different that way, LOLOL
