I meant to post this when the thread on apraxia was fresh, but just never got time. One of the experts in the field of Apraxia is Nancy Kaufman, and this is her website. www.kidspeech.com/There is a lot of exceptionally good material here about Apraxia, and she lists a number of strategies for treatment. She is actually here in Michigan, and we have contemplated having Ethan seen there, but our insurance will not cover it, so it will be expensive! I have talked to families who have had excellent results using her program. This is a link to her kit, Ethan's current speech therapist is using this with him with really good results: www.kidspeech.com/index.php?page=42

Laura,
I E-mailed Nancy Kaufman about Eric's diagnosis of Apraxia. She wrote back immediately...said she would be glad to evaluate Eric, either in person or we could send a video/DVD of a speech session. I am very tempted to do one of the above. My insurance won't cover it either, and hubby's job is very shaky right now, so I'm not sure what we are doing. But it might be worth the cost. Dolly

Laura,
No, I had been to her website last week, and e-mailed her then. But she did answer back the next day. Sounds like a good program...are you near her? I see that you both are in Michigan. I think its about 4-5hr drive for us here in Ohio. Not too bad...may still end up doing this........Dolly

I found www.apraxia-kids.org to be a useful resource for those who may want to take a look. My son, non-DS has a severe expressive language delay and phonological disorder. they are treating him as if he has apraxix, using the easy does it afor apraxia program, and some of David Hammer research. Try it, it is working for us. The reason they will not diagnos himwith apraxia, is becuase he is not five yet. Apparently here they dont make that diagnosis until 5. Robyn

Robyn,
Apraxia kids is a great resource! I have one of David Hammer's lectures, and I got it from Pennsylvania's early intervention free for the asking! (I live in Michigan) I believe the person who told me to request it was someone on the apraxia kids list-serve. I posted here about it some time ago, and several of us asked for copies. I got copies of three different tapes for free!

We now have an appointment set to see Nancy Kaufman in a couple of weeks. It was a very interesting conversation that her and I had. First, she asked if I was a teacher because I sounded like one, hmmmm, I guess it makes an impression when you SOUND like you know what you are talking about, LOL! Thanks guys, I've learned 99% of what I know from all of you! ;D I did get some mixed signals from her about what she thought of Jason's communication situation. But, I guess that's to be expected until she actually evaluates him. Interestingly, she did ask me what his cognitive level was. I'm pretty sure I stammered and stuttered over a response because I wasn't sure what she was looking for . . . a number??? I was very worried that the next thing she was going to say was "because of his cognitive impairment . . . " you know, those words I hate!! So, I didn't get a really good feel from her that she is going to necessarily have the answers we are looking for for Jason, however, she is going to do the evaluation herself. She said that she usually does not evaluate the older kids, but she is very interested in seeing Jason for herself. Hmmmm, not sure if that's a good sign or not - hope I didn't make him out to be a really weird case or something! We also should have our new IEP meeting scheduled here in the next couple of weeks. You were correct, Laura, his teacher didn't try to talk me out of it again since I put it in writing this time. Thanks for your help on this! Jessie

Now we have apraxia to deal with as well. Thanks for the info!
Take care.
