OK, I'm out here in the living room, and heard a BIG KABOOM from Nicholas' room, where he's supposed to be laying down resting. (He refuses to take a nap sometimes, so he has to at least lay down!)
Anyway, I open his door and peek in, and there he is, sitting on the floor listening to his CD player that he turned on. HE CLIMBED OUT OF THE CRIB!!! First time he's done this. We've put off the "Big boy bed" because he's never tried to climb out, and it was easier to get him to lie down. Guess we're gonna have to do the big boy bed, now!

Valerie.. Russell can climb out and he is STILL in a crib! LOL Climbing out didn't get him a big boy bed LOL... but for safety reasons in the way he sleeps... the crib is better for now. One day we will!

Actually, A, I know what you mean about the safety issues! Nicholas is a VERY WILD sleeper. He has one of those convertable cribs, and the next step is a toddler bed. This one has a rail at the head and foot of the bed, with a little gap in the middle, so little safer than a regular bed.
I'm still debating it, but from the sounds of the KA BOOM, he might be safer in the toddler bed than climbing out! ;D

Have you all seen the crib tents? They have them for regular cribs as well as pack and plays. We bought both because my daughter started climbing out of her crib at 14 months.
Needless to say it was way too early for a toddler bed at that time. We put on the crib tent. At first I didn't really like the idea..but we had no choice. She was way to young to be in a toddler bed, but big enough to climb (or worse, fall) out of the crib. She was young enough not to really care there was a tent over her crib...but with older kids..maybe you could make it a cool thing to have a tent over the crib.

I remember those KABOOMS all to well, and am living them again with my almost 2 year old (non DS). But, Kourtney went into a toddler bed at around 3. Good luck to you !!

My oldest son started climbing out of his at 9 mos, and he just went to a regular bed. I think he would have destroyed one of those tents! He did everything really fast, he was walking at 7 1/2 mos, and everything else went just as quickly. So we're kind of enjoying Nicholas taking some time through the stages!

Valerie!!!! How did you survive your older son? My older daughter started walking at 10 1/2 months, was climbing and into everything.
Sarah will be 4 next month and is still in her crib. I will keep her there as long as she will stay in it. A friend of mine got the twin size Little Tykes race car bed and her son (Ds) loves it. When we go visit, Sarah plays and plays on that bed. I wish they made something similar to it for little girls. At least your child won't fall out of the race car bed even if he is a wild sleeper like Sarah. I would try the tent thing first before quitting the crib.

Chris, the girl Little Tykes bed would be the Doll House looking one I do believe. They do have a "girl" version Little Tykes bed. **Chris I just checked and I stand corrected. They USE to have a girl doll house bed and now they don't. BUT.. they do have a PINK race car bed for girls!!!! www.littletikes.com/toys/Toys-List.aspx?ProductAgeRanges_ID=&ProductCategory_ID=56&Description=BEDS&SortOrderI am digging on the Noah's Ark bed though.. kind cool! My neice started climbing out of her bed at 9 months also. It was hilarious actually. She has always been a big girl and I remember us catching her trying to climb out, all chubby and cute and got stuck on the rail!!! LMAO.. since my niece was not walking yet, my sis had to put a twin mattress under her bed... and then one day she finally just didn't sleep in the crib anymore.. she slept on the couch or in someone else's bed I do believe LOLOL! Chris, I am with you! Russell will be in this crib until he is too big for it! Glad he is on the tiny side!!! heehee A.

I would absolutely go for the Lil Tykes car bed that uses a crib mattress. When potty training starts, it is so nice to change a crib mattress and the sheets and blankets fit in one load of laundry - not to mention the fact that you already own the crib sheets. It is also great for the inevitable stomach viruses.
As for keeping track of our rascal, we double gated the doorway to his bedroom. We made sure we had two gates with the top and bottom being straight. This way we could fit them together without any risk of our son squeezing his head through an opening and hanging himself.
We also had the alarm horn placed inside our house so we wouldn't continually wake the neighbors once the gates came down. If our son started to go downstairs, the invisible beam picked him up and the alarm went off right in his face! The horn was hidden in a vent. He only set it off once. Scared the heck out of him.
