Forgive me if I reapeat myself, but in response to the termination of DS post I must let you in on what our experiance was and our idea. Following Peanuts birth, my husband and I decided the public needs to be educated about our little kiddos, and their potential (just like any other kid), so we contacted Oprah. She never called us back. But think of it, who better in this day and age to do a legitimate story on DS and be listened too? Perhaps if we all emailed her with show suggetions on DS we might help change these womens minds re: termination. Also, remember how powerful Oprah is, whatever she says is gold...we just need to put the bug in her ear. If you have a moment go to www.oprah.com and leave your show idea re DS maybe we can change the future of other kids yet to come. Especially if we inundate the show with that specific topic suggestion. Just a thought. Robyn

We've been trying to get Oprah to do a show on DS forever. She has Martha Beck on her show a lot, who has a son named Adam with DS. (The Book Expecting Adam)
And I also send letters every six months to all of the other talk shows as well. I've had much better luck with local media in my experience.

It's worth a shot Robyn! We sent in LOTS of requests to the Oprah show several years ago for them to do a show about Uno Mas!!! To those of us who were talking about it back then, it seemed like a perfect idea....there is access to so many BAD things on the internet, and then we have this WONDERFUL place for support, friendship, etc!!! That would have also been a great way for us to promote a positive light on Ds.

Robyn.... I just answered this on the other thread so I will cut and paste what I wrote there to here...
Robyn... we here at UNO tried to get Oprah to do a story a few years ago. We were focussing on how wonderful UNO is and how it has bought so many families together from all over the world, and using one common thread...DS... Actually, I was hoping she would do the story and pay for Myself and Lewsi to come over there and meet everyone!! She can afford my airfares...I can't!! LOL... was worth a try!! But sadly nothing ever came of it...I dont think anyone even received a reply to any letters emails etc...

Is this just for children?
I haven't been to Oprah's website in a couple of years now. I was so tempted to e-mail her about this issue but I wasn't sure if I wanted them to have my e-mail address. I was using just the one computer you know and Dad doesn't want me to give out my e-mail address to anyone I don't know. I was so tempted though! I want to see adults too who have Down syndrome on these type of shows. I am just not sure about me being on the show. After all, I am not working and live with my parents. They usually want those who are working in their communities and living independently. It is these type of people who have Down syndrome who need to be on her show.

Debbie - If Oprah was to do a show on DS, I would hope she would represent not just children but people w/ DS of all ages. AS someone else stated, you would be a wonderful guest...you are so well spoken (written, lol, since I've never actually heard you speak) and, I think, an inspiration for so many here at Uno. You may not work & you live w/ your parents but I think you are an amazing young woman! I think you would be a wonderful guest. laurie

I love the idea of the Oprah show. However, and I'm not sure how all of you have worded your e-mails to the show, but maybe we shouldn't really approach it with the idea of it being anti-abortion so much as pro education for the general public to learn about people with disabilities. The abortion issue is a lightning rod issue, and after watching Oprah all these years, I really couldn't tell you what her stance is on it. Which, in my opinion, means that she doesn't take a public stance on it and might not want to do a segment on Ds if that is the message we are asking her to convey. Obviously, it would be the underlying message, but I think it needs to be suggested in a more positive, educational light.
Just a thought anyway . . .

Our gimmick several years ago was to get her to do a show on our website...and bring many of us together who had never met in person.....
Jackie....ps...never got any responses.
I have heard that to post a large envelope to her with lots of attention getting things on it....sometimes gets thru to those who make decisions.
Remember...she was in Amarillo a few years ago for the beef trials....and literally NO ONE could get to her.....she did make one appearance in Wal Mart.....but all those months it was like she was not here at all.

Jessie hit the nail on the head. After watching Oprah for umpteen million years, I am sure she would not even come close to doing a show on any subject that even hints about abortion. It is very difficult to discuss Ds without also discussing prenatal testing, etc.
We would probably have much better luck if we contacted the Fox News Channel. Unfortunately, you would probably be preaching to the choir.
