I have a concern. Luke will be 6 in November and he's never called me Mom or my DH a Dad. Is that characteristics of an Autism? What about your kids? Do they call you "Mom" of "Dad" if they want something? How old they were when they start doing that? Thanks to all, Alice

Does Luke Talk? Not saying MOM or DAD to the appropriate person is not an indicator of Autism from what I have learned so far. It would be the lack of communication all together that might be something to look into. If Luke speaks and/or can sign, identify your pics (point to mom in a picture)ect..., I wouldn't worry about Autism. Russell doesn't call me anything LOL... but he DOES know who mommy is I think He is very primative in how he addresses his needs with us but if he DOES want something he will come to me more then anyone here.. even if Kevin and Regan are in the same room, he comes to mom the most..so he does know who I am! Regan always called me mom or mama...and Reece ALWAYS calls me MOMMY! LOL.. so each child is different in my house all together. A.

I started really trying to remember when Emily first called me "Mom" or her dad "Dad"............her very first attempt was "MA"!!!!! And she yelled it at me as though she wanted something urgent! I don't remember ever really telling her or teaching her to use those names for us, so I'm thinking she picked it up by hearing her brothers call us Mom and Dad. Does Boris call you Mom and Dad? I would think Luke would pick up on those terms after hearing his brother use them. He may just need more time.............and maybe it would help if you would sort of exaggerate the use of those words, like using them really often "Come and give MOM a hug Luke", "Go and sit with DAD, Luke"...........that sort of thing.
Steff......lol Emily has always called me MOM, (rather than Mommy) and I always sort of hoped she would call me Mommy! (I'm thinking that would have made me feel younger!! She also uses "SUSAN ELAINE" if I'm not paying attention to her!

Kourtney calls me "Ma, Mom, Mommy, and she calls her dad, "Dad, or Daddy". I also think that she picked this up from her older sisters, sometimes she calls me "Aunt Shell" but that is when my nieces or nephews are over.

Logan is 2 1/2 and doesn't address either one of us by name. He will make the sign for mom or dad upon request, but he doesn't use the sign without our prompt. So . . . we're still waiting for this milestone.

Yes, Meghan (4 1/2) calls us mommy & daddy. Does Luke use the signs for Mom & Dad? Does he call his brothers by their names, or the dog (did you get a dog? I can't remember), or others. I would show him the signs and MAKE him use them when he wants to get your attention or wants something. Don't allow him to tug your hands and pull you to the refrigerator for a drink. Make him say/sign mom or an approximation. make sure you use them. "Now you say 'thank you mommy'" that sort of thing, consistently. Do you anticipate his needs so he doesn't *need* to use mommy or daddy? let him ask, instead of asking him. good luck! and I hope you and your hubby hear those words soon! laurie

Nicholas signs mom and dad a lot, and he can also say "Mom" and "Dad." But only when he really, really, really, really wants something!

Cole, 3 years old, uses mama, mommy, kristin, daddy, and daddyruss (definitely one word all mushed together!) to call us. He does do it spontaneously when he's thinking about us, I guess, or when he thinks he's lost! ("where's mommy?" , etc.) Never heard lack of using these terms in associatioin w/ autism, but then again, as far as we know, Cole is not autistic, so I am not real "schooled" on the earmarkers of autism.

Carter has Dada and down and wil occasionally use Da or Papa(that one is mostly for my dad, though). When it comes to me, well, I don't get much. If it's a 911 emergency or he really, really wants something and I am not looking at him fast enough it's MA! Sometimes EEYYY MAAA!!! (hey, ma) but that's about that. As long as he doesn't say hey lady, I suppose I should be happy :lol

I learned the more that I "asked/begged/pleaded" with JT to sign or say Mom the more he would sign "dad" and then sign "silly"........ He says and signs Dad all the time. He'll sign Mom when he's in a really serious mood.....otherwise Dad get's all the calls.

Cooper does say Moma!! He does say Dada but not to his Dad. His dad is not around. He calls my dad, DaDa. He also calls him Pop or Bop. His speech therapist works on his names of family members a lot. He has other family names that he can say, but that is because she works with a lot.
