Stevie is just over 2 years old and recently been deemed overweight. She doesn't look fat - look at her pic. She eats well - all good stuff, almost no bad stuff, and not more than what you'd expect a 2-y-o to eat. She's extremely active: runs, climbs, squats, tip-toes, almost jumps... all day long. But her BMI is way over the 95th %ile What's up? Her thyroid must be in the normal range or we'd have heard by now (test 2 wks ago). Any ideas? Chris too

Is she on the 95th percentile for Down Syndrome? Our kids have their own unique growth and weight charts. I wonder if the BMI chart the Dr. is using is not taking that information into account.

This is the Body Mass Index - which, oddly enough, is not indexed for anything - not gender, not ethnicity, not anything that is actually helpful, like fitness or body fat percentage. She's way above the top line - 90th percentile - on the Ds weight chart, and just above the 25th percentile for height. So, it really looks bad from the Ds charts. On the typical charts, she's right on the 50th for weight, and below the 5th for height. But she's really not at all fat-looking. I'll post a better pic so you can see.

Here she is with a very sleepy Daddy I don't have any good full shots of her, but you can get a pretty good feel for her chubbiness here. Chris too

Awww Chris Too~ Stevie, looks just fine to me, actually she looks ADORABLE ;D "recently been deemed overweight" I am thinking your Doc, who I assumed told you that, is just suggesting maybe watch as although I hate to group our kids with DS they do tend to have trouble with their weight and maybe just maybe they are just wanting to keep an eye on it. One thing I have read many times is a child without DS can eat the exact same as one with DS and do the exact same exercise program and the one with DS will keep on more calories Stevie certainly does NOT look overweight to me. If you are worried maybe they could do another Thyroid test as that seems to be a very common problem with ones with DS. CC ~

Thanks for the encouragement, CC. And I think you are right - they want to keep an eye on it so that she doesn't get saddled with a bigger problem down the line. Both the geneticist and the reg. ped want me to talk to a nutritionist and see them again in 6 months. I think that if the numbers still look bad, they'll re-run the thyroid. I'm just worried that maybe there's some hidden problem - my mind tends to wander to the horrible at times like this. But there is no evidence of any type of imaginary trouble like heavy tumors, or solid bones, or lead-for-blood. I'm goofy and I have a disturbing imagination sometimes Thanks for the tender encouragements! Chris too

She's only two, isn't it ok for her to still have a little baby fat?!!!
I think she's beautiful and I would not consider her "overweight". My Ellie (typical 22 mos) has always run in the very high percentages for weight and low for height. Just something to keep an eye on and her eating habits in check.
If her thyroid test came back ok, I think you've covered the bases for now.
What is her weight and height, just out of curiosity?

Thanks everyone for the encouragement I think she looks nice and healthy too. It's just the crazy numbers that have the drs a bit concerned. Stevie's 31.5 inches "tall" and 28 lbs. Chris too

Fairly close to Ellie then. Last time we had her height & weight checked was in April and she was 31" tall and 23 lbs. So, I guess Stevie is a little chunkier than Ellie.

Chris, Collin was about the same age as Stevie when Riley's told me to "watch" his weight, what he ate. only give him 4oz of juice a day (Collin is a big Juice drinker) etc...because he was a fire plug!! Now about 4 years later we have the other problem...they are worried about his growth and lack of weight gain!!! But also on the flip side of that he has just be diagnosed with Hypothyroidism... I wouldn't worry to much but just keep an eye on what she's eating and even though it's healthy stuff watch the quantity because our kids don't always feel the full feeling and quick as others and will eat and eat and eat if it's something they like. Sam was the same way at two, but now at five he is still 29lbs but seems to have shot upwards a bit. my baby cousin just turned three and she still has those great chubby cheaks that I swear all little girls have.
She's adorable! Jess

I think pediatricians are really trying hard to follow the guidelines for kids and their weights these days...and most pediatricians are aware that kids with ds can suddenly develop obesity problems. I would not obsess about it...she looks just fine to me...but I would try to follow the healthy eating guidlines for all kids.
I know from experience that our kids can gain rapidly almost over night and...that keeping it off in the first place is much easier than trying to get it off later.
And I know it is easy to say this now that I don't have a family at home and a job to juggle as well ...but I think one key is to eliminate fast food and try to eat meals at home.
Another issue here is to make our kids AWARE at the earliest ages possible what a "healthy choice" is when it comes to selecting their own food and snacks. Bad habits are very hard to break. Joan Medlen from Woodbine Press has some excellent publications on these issues.
She is soooo cute....

I think she looks healthy and gorgeous!! My Daniel is now 27 months. He's a tall one at a bit over 33 inches....but still skinny at 25 pounds. Here's a recent picture. My ped said as long as the numbers curve together then they are gaining proportionatly, there's nothing to worry about. When the weight moves up, but the height stays the same......then it might be time to begin watching more closely. I wouldn't worry....she's gorgeous!!

OMG she is soooooooooooooo Adorable and PLEEEEEEEAASE overwieght?
That is simply ridiculous. Like someone prior said, a lot of kids that age are chunky, but she looks absolutely perfect.
Oh and by the way, I think the Neck has that very same outfit!
Cute!
Hugs and don't worry you have one absolutely precious angel there!
Hugs,
Cathy
