Hello all, I took Eric to his ENT yesterday for a follow-up for a failed hearing exam. He still has fluid in his ears, and again, failed his hearing test done at the office. The doc scheduled him for "permanent" ear tubes. Has anyone ever heard of this? Any of your kids have them? The doc told me they stay in longer, and have to be "surgically removed" when children outgrow them. Eric is scheduled to have them put in on October 8th. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with this.

My oldest had them. They do work well, they're usually "T" shaped. The most common problem with them is when it's time for them to come out, the hole usually has to be patched with a skin graft from behind the ear. This happened with my oldest, and while a pain in the butt, was still worth it. His tubes stayed in for 4 years.

Our ENT discussed the permanent ones with us, but my daughter gets so congested and it is so thick she blows out the non-permanent ones. Our ENT thought that if she had the permanent ones they would blow out a larger hole and cause more damage, so we still use the other ones and replace them about every 18 months or so.

oh yes, Lauren just had a set placed 2 months ago. It was her 7th set of ear tubes and hopefully her final set for a while. She was going in too often with the other kind but he was waiting on her to grow a bit more. We have not had a problem with them so far. Her nose has been less "runny" The sad thing is she still suffered perm. hearing loss. We need to get her hearing aides but they cost a lot.

Renee-- Ricki has mild hearing loss in one ear and moderate in the other. We got her a month and a half ago an aid for the moderately effected ear. All I can say is that it has effected her TREMENDOUSLY. I never realized what a difference it made (always thought one ear was enough....)!!!!!!!! I know, it costs a bomb, but it is worth it. If you DO get an aid, invest also a further $20 for an ear gear cover gearforears.com/index.aspTwo days after ours arrived, the aid fell into a bowl of soup. (Ricki was fed up with the aid and was taking it off. I don't think that a small child could take it off easily with the ear gear.....) The aid survived!! (Not a quarentee- the ear gear is moisture-resistent only, but It was enough this time as we quickly fished the aid out of the soup........)
