Hi, I have a 5 year old daughter with Down Syndrome, who is starting to get some bald spots on the back of her head. I've cut her hair shorter, so it doesn't have to be pulled up as much in elastics, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to slow balding down?

Balding spots can be caused from a # of things. 1..stress related to the body 2...thyroids 3.. aolpecia My son had a bald spot for a while due to major surgery and caused alot stress on his body. I have a friend who daughter lost her hair for untreated Thyroid.... I have a friend who son has alopecia. So first rule out thyroids and any trauma lately. YOu can read up on the Alopecia at www.dermatologychannel.net/alopecia/causes.shtmlYou can visit a dermatologist, there are several treatments plans, depends how far you are willing to go. Good Luck

Also, If your daughter is on any form of Ritalin for ADHD it can cause a temporary form of Alopecia. Connie

Does she sleep on her back? Could it be that she is rubbing it off, or that a wad of it got caught in something when you weren't around? I have a nine-y-o (no Ds) who got a bald spot on top of her head - near the front & including much of her bangs. When I noticed it she said she had no idea, but that she'd gotten some caught in the rabbit cage wire earlier. It must've been a huge chunk that she'd left with the bunny, cause she's still growing it out 10 months later I hope that it's just something like that! Let us know what you find out. Chris too

i don't think i saw this posting- my daughter is 7 yrs old- she has alopica aerta and she started losing her hair at 14 months old. and was all the weigh bald by at least 24 or 25 months old. we do not have a wig for her- she does not want any right now. it is something in her immune system- her throid is great- no problems there- her eye brow she lost them a few months ago and that is called i belive universal topea. and now her eye brows have grown back again. check with a dermatoligst. we do not go to them- health insurance will not pay for us to go the the doctors- they call it a luxury - she can live with out her hair. that is so nasty. sue

HI, my son has Alopecia and he's also 5. He began losing alot of his hair and 1 eyebrow too! So his ped referred us to a dermotologist who prescribed a safe topical steroid (clear gel type cream) that I applied 2xdaily to his scalp. Within 6 weeks I noticed his hair stopped falling out and fine new hair growth is appearing. His eyebrow is still not back yet... but I'm staying positive! I read that 10 percent of children with DS will get this at some point in their lives and the causes are still being researched. Yes other causes can be stress and thyroid related too. Best wishes and just get her too a dermotologist. Oh and Welcome! ;D
