Russell has been home sick now I feel so bad for him. He got one of his nasty colds week from last Monday. I thought after a few days of him having the cold, it was going to turn into this weird bacterial thing that happens once or twice a year with his colds.. and it eats away his face and finger he sucks... because it looked like it was headed that direction... but nope. And it didn't go away either. So.. jump to this week... after being out of school ALL last week I called the Ped on Monday. We were actually at the docs office for Regan the week before and even though I knew it was only a cold I said "whatcha think about Russell?!"... and Ped's reply was a nasty cold. So... after 8 days... I have seen WAYY too much snot and his cough is nasty like always and it keeps wandering into his eye too. At first the nurse said the doc wants to wait a few more days.. which, I am not an antibiotic person, so I said ok. My ped doesn't just dose out anti's either... so whatever.. I just said I'll wait and see a few more days. Then she calls back again and says she talked to the doc again and how 'bout anti's. I said ok because even though he gets long, lingering nasty colds.. this one had gripped him and would NOT go.. so I was wondering if it was something else. He has no fevers nor any other major symptoms.. but you never know.. so I opted for the anti's. Well, here we are on Thurs Do they have Rotor Rooter for the nose? LMAO... They told me to switch to an expecterant for the cough stuff (was only using a suppressant) and he will NOT cough up anything. He isn't aspirating either.. but he will not cough it up.. and he can't blow his poor widdle nose... And the snot is still opaque, white-yellowish.. so I know something is still going on in there. And he always gets a nasty cough with his colds due to his reflux.. but this time it's way more productive then usual... But... he won't be at school tomorrow either. He has way too much coming out of him and going on, even if not contagious, that he can't go to school. And... once again he has missed a field trip AND the party tomorrow. So.. PLEASE say a prayer that this darn thing LEAVES Russell soon!!!!! oh.. and a side note.. we are still waiting for everyone to pick a IEP date... just waiting and waiting... it's my new thing do to.. just play the waiting game... colds.. IEPS... ect... LOL A.

A. Not just poor Russell but poor you. Collin gets cold that linger, too. His usually last 2-3 weeks instead of the normal 7-10 days. But, I refuse to take him out of school because he would never be there if I did. I have only had them complain 1x and I provided a doctors note and have not heard anything more from them. I just explained he can be sick at home just as easy as he can at school and this way he is getting his therapies and education!! He's not contagious and not running a fever...so deal!! But, don't get me wrong if he is really sick, running a high fever and lathargic I do keep him home. Hugs, Connie

Well, the reasons I kept him home is that his nose is constantly running SO bad and SO icky (the white, opaque yellowish stuff), we are talking 24/7, that he wouldn't have time to learn or do therapies.. and someone would literally have to tend to him and never leave his side. And in our nurse notes they send home, EVEN if they aren't contaigous but like the way Russell has been, they are to be at home. It's a good thing I DON'T work. I have sent him to school with sniffles and such before.. but this is truly out of control. And his cough is awful, which, he has gone to school before with coughs because they linger for weeks after the cold is gone.. but this time it's alot worse.. it's the whole big picture. And Russell is probably the only "oral" child in the class...so it's NOT good to send him to school like this.
Also.. this year it's been SOOOO bad with sickness in the class that actually the nurse and admin were very concerned on what was going on... so it's for the best for everyone that Russell is at home. I don't mind. And, last week a note was sent home that strep was in the room!! YIKES! That is something we do NOT need here! So.... we sit and sit and wait for the darn snot monsters to GO AWAY!!!!!

Hmmm A ~ just a thought but I know with my guy he can be sicker then you think and NOT have any fever at the time. If you are still getting the yellowish after being on the antibiotics since Monday, maybe, the Ped should see him to make sure he has nothing else going on there, KWIM YIKES I have taken Chris in for what I thought was not a real big deal to find out he had strep and sinus infection. I was totally surprised BUT as I said just a thougth... Hope RUSSELL feels better Pronto CC ~

Well, I did call the doc yesterday and they said to give the anti's a couple more days and call on Friday... so we will see the doc tomorrow unless something changes. Because I too was concerned after 2 days of anti's nothing had changed. But then again.. we could have just hit the jackpot on SNOT! LMAO A.

Oh, poor thing! I hope he's better soon!
Does he act like he doesn't feel good when this happens, or does he just go on like normal? Just wondering, cause it seems like our kids have a pretty high tolerance for things!

Well, he has had no other symptoms other then the SNOT, nasty cough and the cold going into his eye a couple times now. There were days where he acted "ok" but you could tell he wasn't 100%. Then on other days he gets stir crazy and snot or not, he will try to play and rough house with you LOL. He seems to be acting pretty good considering.. I think when the cough gets yucky (it comes and goes in stages of productivity) is when he doens't do as much around the house.

I know how you feel A. Andrew has had a nasty cold going on 3 weeks now! We saw the Ped last week and he checked him out and said the same thing..."nasty cold". Well... we ended up back at the Ped's office yesterday and found out he has an ear infection. So... we DID get anti's, which made me happy. As for the snot....ugggg..... does it ever stop?? Seems like there should be nothing left in there. Poor Russell....and poor YOU! I know Andrew is MISERABLE.
Just a question for you (or anyone else) this is only my second winter with Andrew, but he was sick ALL last winter until May hit. Are our kids sick more often or longer then other kids? Is there some "trick" that seems to help? (wishful thinking, I know).
Good luck and I hope Russell is feeling better soon. -Trisha

Trisha, in our case, Nicholas has never really been prone to being sick, which I am very thankful for!!! He's had a few ear infections, but acts like they don't even phase him. And he's had a little 24 hour bug twice where he's been throwing up. But nothing lingering.

Trisha, I know Russell gets more colds and such then my other two kids but it wasn't all winter long that I can remember. We did go through alot of fevers with no other sypmtoms for years which I just got use to. Fevers don't bother me by themselves so we would have to just let them run it's course. He doesn't seem to get them as frequently as he use to. Now, it seems in his toddler years he gets colds VERY easily. I don't know what you could do about it though. Have your talked to your Ped? I think as Andrew gets a bit older you will see his immune system build and the sickness stuff lessen.

Morning,
I feel for ya...Eric has been home all week with the same gunk....nose running like a faucet, cough, but no fever. He's missing his Halloween party again this year! I'm just treating the symptoms...he acts like normal, just a little glassy eyed. But I gotta tell you, I work as a nurse in a pediatric office and EVERYBODY has this!! And its lasting for weeks with some kids. I have never seen so many kids with this terrible, barky cough...I've given aerosal treatments plenty....and we've sent quite a few kids for chest xrays, with them coming back with pneumonia! We actually had to order more decadron, a shot we give for croup, because we ran out. (usually we only give a few shots a season...not this year). Its been like this since early September...our Ohio weather has been crazy...very warm all summer and early fall, and now cold, wet, and miserable. I worked till 6:30 last night (started at 8:30am)...guess our "winter hours" are starting early this year. So we aren't alone with our little "sickies"....alot of normally healthy kids are getting this junk too. Here's prayers for all the little (and big) kleenex junkies!! And their Moms!

Dolly,
That's NOT good news. Alethea was sick quite a bit last year. To the ER twice, once with pneumonia related issues and the other time with croup related issues. I have a feeling our year is sneaking up on us rather quickly as my 2 middle children started complaining about sore throats yesterday. WHATEVER the others bring home and get/or not get little Lethy gets it all!!!
So as my advice to A goes, I try to do the same "a smile on my face, a tissue in my hand, and a hug in my arms."
I, too, am bracing myself for the "Winter Yuckies!" A, a very good reason not to work outside of the home! I'm with you on that one!
