Hi guys!! I was on another board earlier..(.ohhh the shame) and someone had posted about our kids (generalizing, I know) and their love of music. What really got my attention was she was saying how her son seemed to love piano music the best. This was very interesting to me because we take Andrew to a music and gym class. At class last Saturday, I noticed he would get really "into" the music when there was a piano playing. I mean arms swinging, body rocking, screaming etc. I had never noticed this before. I found it so weird I actually took him home and tried a little experiment. I put on "signing times" CD and he "danced" the way he usually does. Then I put on "baby einstein" with piano and OHH MY GOSH!!! The difference was amazing! I couldn't believe it. I was wondering if anybody else had noticed that their child had a particular style of music that was more energizing to them. Maybe tone or pitch?? Piano or drums?? -Trisha

Well, Russell loves music in general. He truly SHINES when music is around! He is currently up in his room with a NEW boombox (thank you MIL!) until the Christmas one comes LOL. I don't know if I've noticed different genres and how Russell reacts to them.. but I DO know he does like certain CD's more then others....but he found out where a new stash of our CD's are. Last night I came home and giggled... he was listening to CAROL KING!!!! I think if I were to pick a style he liked most.. it would be silly dance songs or songs with alot of beat to them. We do have a piano down stairs and Russell will plink on it from time to time when he is in the mood. A.

Trisha,
That is an interesting topic, one I've never thought about or noticed.
I am a piano teacher and teach in my home. Alethea hates when the students come because they are then playing her piano. She loves to sit and play the piano and pretend she is a big kid. She even has to have a book out and open and turn the pages while playing. It's funny each of my kids did this at the same age and no one ever taught them to put the book on the piano and turn the pages. They just did.
Anyway, Leathy loves music too! All kinds, styles, tempos...we dance and sing and act silly quite a bit of the time with the music as well.
I am a (retired at the age of 25) school teacher as well. When I was teaching 6th grade I used to play instrumental music while the students were doing seatwork. It made for a relaxing atmosphere and the students concentrated more during these times. I believe music is a wonderful motivator for people in general, not just our Ds kids.

For live music, I think Cassie prefers the guitar, she dances and drums along to the beat. For CDs I haven't really noticed any differences in her reactions.

Hmmmm for CHRIS, I would have to say he just LOVES music that goes along with lyrics, KWIM He seems to love the words along with music and he loves to sing OMG he has one FLAT tone, LOLOL BUT just loves to sing Can't say he reacts one way or another to the piano as he has been around it much and actually no real reaction. For our guy its the music with words CC ~

Eric loves any kind of music, from rock to opera. And he loves when we sing to him...any song will do. It helps him calm down and focus. Dolly

Thanks guys for all the replies. I think it will be interesting to see if our kids actually stick to liking a particular style of music as they get older. Ex..classical, drums, guitar, piano etc. It's interesting that some people enjoy a certain type of music over another. Ok.... I'm going to "boogy" on down to Andrew now, and see if I can't teach him some new moves. -Trisha
