My husband and I are starting to get concerned about our son that joined our family in mid-Febraury.
First, some background info: Lukus is 4 years old. He came to us through a disrupted adoption. His previous family told us that he had been to the doctor several times and did not have any medical issues that they were aware of. They gave us his medical records from Hungary...all in Hungarian(he just came to the US in December). And, we can't take him to our pediatrician until the judge signs the adoption paper work(which is several weeks away).
Here's our concern: He sleeps a lot. He sleeps at least 12 hours a night and some nights as much as 13-14 hours. Then, regardless of how much he sleeps at night, he takes a nap everyday....and the nap is anywhere from 2-4 hours long. In the past 2 days he has slept 16 hours one day and 18 hours the next. We have tried shortening the nap, waking him up in the mornings and putting him to bed later. It doesn't work. He falls asleep sitting up, lays down in the floor with a toy and goes to sleep....he sleeps whenever he can and whenever he can. At first, we thought it was a learned behavior......because he was left in a bed a lot while in Hungary. But, he's not just laying in the bed....he is sound asleep. And nothing we have tried has helped....not nutrition, not changing his routine, nothing. He doesn't snore or have any signs that he's not resting when he sleeps, or any signs of sleep apnea. So, I'm starting to get worried that there is something we don't know about his health. He DOES have a scar under his left arm that looks like a medical scar. Is there something medical that I'm missing? Something I should be looking for? I've never known of a 4.5 year old to need that much sleep. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I want to make sure we haven't missed some need that we should be addressing.
If it is just a habit, any ideas on how to break it? He can't sleep 15-18 hours a day once he starts school in the fall!
BTW: The only term I recognize in the medical records is "PDA".....so should we be looking for a heart issue? I'm trying to use an online translator to translate some of the medical records now and we are in the process of scanning them to get them professionally translated. I'm just looking for thought or ideas....or maybe just a few people to tell me I'm paranoid!
