Hi, I hope everyone is well!!
I took Andrew to his first orthopedic appointment today. Whewww... what a long day. The doctor had Andrew "walk" for him (pushing a chair and then holding my hands). He said his ankles roll in quite a bit. He also took x-rays of Andrew's hips and said they looked fine, but said we should have x-rays once a year to check and make sure everything is ok. He sent us to go get fitted for SMO'S which I guess are the same as AFO's...maybe not as high?? I'm not sure.
I thought they would cast him and then cut the cast off to make the impression of his foot. But instead they are giving him something fairly new. All they had to do was measure different areas of his foot and wahlah...we were done. It took all of 2 minutes and he slept the whole time! ;D The SMO's look kind of like a plastic slipper, or bootie with 2 velcro straps, one across the front top of the foot and one at the front of the ankle. They came in all different patterns, dinosaurs, butterflies, flowers etc. But we chose the plain white so I could make sure they matched everything. It just seemed easier. They said they will be ready for us to pick up in about a week to a week and a half.
I hope this gives him the stability he needs to really start walking on his own. He tries sooo hard and I know he wants to do it.
Did any of your kids really take off walking once they had the AFO's? Just curious.
Well that was our day in a nut shell, and now I'm off to crash. We are getting a snow storm here tomorrow so maybe school will get cancelled and I'll be able to sleep a bit longer. Wishful thinking I know. ;D
