My son, who is 14, likes to take walks around our neighborhood. The rule is that he has to file a flight plan with me and stick to it. If there are any changes, I need a phone call. Sometimes he will stop at friends' homes. This is a very close knit community.
Today, I give him my cell phone as an experiment. I want to see if he will call me if he decides to change his route. And, I presume he will be a tad bit safer with the phone.
He continues to call me with route changes. He is visiting anybody he can think of because he can call home and tell me where he is at the moment. I have drilled into him that there is nothing wrong with going on walks. There is something wrong with scaring your mother. Since I am not scared he therefore does not feel the need to come home.
The calls come every ten minutes. I feel like a hostage negotiator. "No, don't hang up. We can work this out. No one needs to get grounded. Just walk through the door, give up the phone and this can end peacefully."
Phone's ringing. Gotta go.

Hilarious!
Ours all get cell phones once they reach the age of ten. That might need to be modified a bit for Joshua.

He did come home. His walkman batteries went dead! Those hostage negotiators know what they are doing. They always cut off the power!
When he was a baby, I thought antics like this would make me nuts. Instead, I find them delightful. Love watching him become independent.

Too cool. I sometimes wish we lived in an area where Tyler could explore and walk around. Well, we do, but it is called the woods. Daddy has yet to figure out a GPS system for our little explorer.
MB, glad to read elsewhere that your back is doing better.

MB, That was funny but not for you I am sure! I am a little jealous, I don't have a Cell phone. Mom thinks it would be good for me to have one when I am out so I can call her if something came up.

I'll take her! There's always room for one more around here. (Just kidding . . . I know you wouldn't give her up for anything.) We started getting ours cell phones when they had paper routes. It felt "safer". They aren't allowed to use them for anything except to call parents, grandparents, brothers, or sisters until they're a little older. So far, three of our six have their own phones.

Well, that makes sense.. for emergencies. See, Regan does not need one for things like that yet. And I just think for her, 12 is too young. When she gets older and more into doing things without parents and needs to check in, emergencies, maybe plays sports, ect.. she MAY need one... but not quite yet. Her BF got a prepaid one for Christmas and I didn't get to live that down for DAYS afterwards LOLOL
