That's right...nobody even has to reply...I just need to let this out. Andrew was on antibiotics last week for an ear infection. He just got off them last Wed. You guessed it... we were back to the ped's yesterday morning to get yet ANOTHER antibiotic for yet ANOTHER ear infection..UGGGG. This time he also has that yucky goopey nose, kwim? He has this weird congestion sound all winter long but his ped says his lungs are clear.(More then one doctor has seen him and all say it is NOT in his lungs). So anyway...I called to cancel two therapy sessions yesterday. One therapist was really nice and said how her family had been sick too, that time of year etc. The other therapist totally slammed me. She said, "Well there just has to be something they can do for him. How can you just sit by and watch him be so sick and not push them to do something?" Ummmm... excuse me?? He is on antibiotics. What else should I do? Schedule to have them pumped in intravenously? Or maybe I should just call a surgeon and have any old surgery preformed on him so she will think I'm doing something. What does she want me to do?? We have discussed tubes with his ped already and have ALL come to the conclusion that we would ALL like to wait as long as we can. How long? When is that time? I don't know. Next month... next year... I don't know. It could be next week if these anti's don't work. But give me a break!!! I am doing the best I can.
I'm sorry.....maybe it's me. Maybe I just didn't realize that therapists had such an extensive medical degree and knew more then my ped.
Uggggghhhh.....what does she think? Does she think I'm keeping Andrew from some medical cure just because I like to run around sanitizing everything and wiping up a goopey nose all day? Yeah....that's my dream goal in life, to wipe up goopey noses and try to keep him from wiping it all over me, the couch, the dog etc.
Ok.. I need to stop now before I get even more mad. I thought getting it out on here would help me feel better and "let it go" but obviously it's not working. Thanks for listening guys. -Trisha

Oh man Trisha,
I can so relate. Katie gets sick every fall and stays on anti's thru spring...
She was CONSTANTLY sick, I had my run-ins with her ST who blame her lack of speech on URI's
This year, Katies ENT prescribed a prophylactic Anti.. low dose that she takes all season (Nov-May). Knock on wood, she has not had one goopy nose since. She has had three sets of tubes, the last ones being T-tubes and she has had her tonsils and adenoids removed. They all helped, but she would still get Sinus Infections, so hence the prophylactic Anti's.
You know some people can't help themselves. I find myself becoming extremely defensive when someone says to me.. your kid is always sick, like I let that happen on purpose. So hugs going out to you and let us know how things go.
Cathy

Hope Andrew is feeling better and that nose dries up real soon ... for his sake and yours ... and the dog too!

It makes me crazy that some therapists can be so insensitive! You would think that a person who works with children with disabilities would realize a lot are more medically fragile.I had a nasty therapist go off on me once after canceling a aquatic therapy apointment because Hannah was sick. Fortunalty another therapist was there and it got back to her boss who then had a talk with her. I think that therapist needs a lesson in sensitivity training. I feel for you!

Oh and it doesn't stop for the school board therapists! We had our IEP recently and the OT was SO out of line with little comments that I actually got into a fight with her about how nasty she was being and I kept calling her out during the IEP for her inappropriate behavior...I love therapists don't get me wrong. I just think sometimes they step over that line if they get too comfortable with you.

OH man.. Trisha!!!!! Sorry the therapist put you in a funky mood!! You ARE doing your best!!! REMEMBER THAT!!!! And when you have had enough with the colds.. SAY that to the Peds.. say ENOUGH.. what else can we do? Type of thing...sometimes we play the waiting game with the peds too long.. and we have to sometimes whine and say.. ENOUGH! Stay strong girl!!!!
Does Andrew drink milk? I know when Russell was around 2 or 3 yrs old we acutally took him off of milk completely for a year or two.. because it really made colds and congestion ect.. WORSE! So.. just something to think about.
HUGS!!!!
A.

Therapists can be a pain in the butt.
Ashlie sees an Immune specialist and got diagnosed with low t and b cells which means she cant fight off infections so she is on proph. anti's like Katie is and so far it has helped. But I would honestly reccomend tubes if you havent yet. Ashlie has a mild to moderate loss now since she had a lot of ear infections that went undetcted and she ended up with tubes since age 3 and that way we can tell when she has an infection since it will drain but the damage had allready been done and so she has a hearing aide in her left ear now. I dont want to scare you but dont want you to really lean away from tube surgery if ear infections are a problems now.
Hugs Heidi

Trisha, I'm so sorry to hear that Andrew is still fighting an ear infection. It's most likely that the other antibiotic wasn't strong enough clear it up in the first place. ( Been there done that so many times with my little guy.) I hope that Andrew is feeling better real soon!! We deal with allergies all the time which usually ends up in a sinus infection & it seems like we only get to relax a couple of weeks during the summer. Besides prescription allergy meds & a decongestant, our ENT also has us using saline nose spray to help with the yucky nose. I also wanted to share a link with you that has some information about a condition that my son ended up with because of chronic ear infections. My son has actually had 2 tympanoplasty with fascia graft procedures on his right ear & he's had 4 sets of tubes in both ears. We got lucky & didn't have to have a full mastiodectomy done on his right ear, but they did find scar tissue on his Incus ear bone with the 2nd procedure so the doctor cleaned it up as much as he could. With the first procedure, the doctor also widen his right ear canal so that he was able to see the drum better. He said he usually doesn't like to do this because it does cause some hearing loss, but we felt like it was in Jared's best interest to have it done. At Jared's last check up, his tubes are out & he has a hole in his right ear drum that we're hoping will heal up on it's own. Jared also has hearing loss in both ears but not enough at this time for hearing aides. www.entnet.org/healthinfo/ears/cholesteatoma.cfmI wish you all the best & hope that Andrew has a very speedy recovery. Sherri Ps: Sorry about your therapists making insensitive remarks. Until they walk in our shoes I really don't think they'll ever understand.

I hear ya! In our world, we've had a few therapists that were pretty high and mighty and they knew all, yep even more than medical doctors, or at least in their own eyes!
We've got antibiotic woes at our house too. Between Christmas and New Years, all 5 of us had an appointment at urgent care, we were all given antibiotics to treat strep and pink eye (belated Christmas gifts from my nieces and nephews LOL). It took 8 days, and then our 10 year old broke out in a rash. School called, I picked him up went to the Dr., yep he's allergic to the antibiotic. The next morning is Saturday morning, he wakes me up asking if his rash looks better.....ah no, about a million times worse. It was scarey! So back to urgent care we went. There's a good chance he'll have some permenant scarring. I've never seen anything like that!
Hope your little guys nose stops running soon! Dawn

Venting certainly helps! So feel free! I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. Very frustrating for other people to act like they know more about what's going on with your kids or what needs to be done than you do. I can very easily tell you to not let it get to you, because it's not worth it. But things like that tend to hit you where it hurts and stick with you. But...I'll say it anyway. She's not worth it!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D I do hope Andrew gets to feeling better soon!

Thanks guys!! I'm in a much better mood now. I called and left her a voice mail telling her I would like to talk with her when she comes next week. I've decided I need to set her straight now or it will eat away at me.
Andrew is doing MUCH better. He has been on the anti's for 4 days now and the conjuctivitis seems all gone and he is his usual happy self again (well at least some of the time...LOL!!).
You guys gave me ALOT of very useful information as well. I am now much more educated about ear infections and can talk with his Ped armed with more info then before. Thanks to you all!! -Trisha

So glad to hear Andrew is doing better. Grrrrr on the whole conversation with the therapist. There must be a course that therapists are required to take that teaches them to be 'just that much better' than everyone else! LOL
Glad to hear you are in a better mood too!
