Well Emily has officially joined the JELLO SHOTS CLUB Katie said that during her girls weekend Em partook generously of them and also made the observation that they are "good for you" because they are low in fat! Tonite is another first for her. She will be subbing for Katie's Bunco group. She is pretty excited about it, Katie says. It's at their house and she has determined that she will be in charge of serving dessert and beer. I can hardly wait to hear about her evening. Jackie mom to Emily 25 in Texas

LOL.... I really really misread this!!!! When I first read this, I saw that Jackie was posting and it was about Jello Shot....I could not in my life figure out what "Jackie" was doing and why in the world she would even begin to think it was ok to give her daugher Jello Shot and post about it when she is still so young!!!! I really should not read posts that late at night....I have enough problems even when I'm not tired!!! But NOW I understand and am pleased to see it was OUR Emily who is 21 and not one of Jello Jackies daughters who are not!!! I think your stories of Emily drinking are some of my favorites because it really shows how much like a "Normal" young adult she is.....She likes to drink and gamble... Hummm....not that thats a good thing but....I THINK ITS GREAT!!! Connie

Ok...first...what are LEMON DROPS?
Bunco is a dice game...(not to offend anyone here but...its a rather mindless one...LOL...meaning you can play and not think about what you are doing. Mostly involves just throwing dice) It is a game best played with at least 3 tables of 4. Katie said Emily did well...fit in nicely...visited with people and that they will probably use her from now on as a regular substitute.
I was chatting with Susan this morning and told her that Emily is enjoying such a "normal" life these days with very little focus on her disability that it sort of makes me want NOT to go the NDSC and places like that. The "badge of honor" these days at the conferences... among parents of young adults has moved from car keys to...having a real job. I am frustrated because circumstances beyond my control (i.e. Katie needing her to nanny) seem to constantly prevent this from happening. I guess I just want to go to these meetings and crow about her working here or there. But what she DOES have that so many of these adults DON'T have is a totally regular life. In Austin she does like to go to the disability dances...but that is the only time she rubs shoulders with another disabled person.
She is part of Katie's neighborhood...she goes to school events (as a parent would)...does things like Bunco...goes to Curves (at a different time than Katie)...makes her own grocery lists...goes to adult gatherings with Tony and Katie...a functional adult in Katie's household. And as I have said many times ...she is just an average person with DS who has been given the freedom to develop her own personality and life. All of this has happened very naturally without concentrating on developing circles of support...etc. Probably because through the years we have managed (all of us) to see Emily as a person first and the DS second...just don't know.
But if her life gives you hope for the future then that is great...I am sure if you asked Emily she would say its a good one.

Jackie, your words are always being filed & stored in my brain for future use! (Yes dear, I do listen!!!)
Now, a lemon drop is a shot of Absolut Citron with a sugar coated wedge of lemon as a chaser. These have gotten me in trouble in my past life. Keep Emily away from these...they're gooooood!
Thanks for the explanation of Bunco. I just like the name, bunco bunco bunco...it's fun to say. Ok, I'm a little off-kilter today. Just glad it's Friday! Have a great weekend!!!
