I have both a 7th grader and an 8th grader. Last year when my daughter was in 7th grade, there were a number of incidents where girls that used to be her friends all the sudden no longer were. It is a very hard age because the kids are trying so desperately to find security in school.
Sounds like Emily did awesome at the dance though.

You know.. I really enjoyed your post.. I felt beaming with pride over Emily and the dance and she isn't even my child!!! LOL... I am proud of YOU too Susan... you are such a good mommy and are identifying some concerns, feelings and observations you had.. AWESOME!! THAT is how we grow as parents and it's easier to loosen those apron strings that way. I think it's only natural we want to protect our children from hurt and the angst that comes with middle school. As a mother of a child in middle school.. my heart aches for Regan some days... and I know middle school can be SOO rough on girls in general, Emily included. But... what you identified... we can't always shield them and protect them forever.. we can try .. and try to guide.. but they can't grow and learn if they don't get hurt sometimes.. and we can't grow and learn as parents either And yes.. I am sure as parents.. we ALL tend to worry about possible "differences" more then they do.. if they do at all.. they are happy just being themselves right?! I am so glad Emily had a wondeful time at the dance!!!! You made it easy for me to picture her there having so much fun and I enjoyed that!!!! Hugs!! A.

LOLOL A....when Susan and I were talking about the dance, I was sitting there with the biggest smile and tears in my eyes totally overjoyed for her, and she isnt even ours!!!! LOL, btw, we agreed that the pittsburg trip has to include a night of dancing in a room for the kiddos as they all seem to love it so much. And for those of you who know Chase and Emily have been engaged for about six or seven years now...YES, I did hear first hand about that little missy being asked to dance THREE times by a young man, AND I saw the picture, good thing I live so far away, LOLOL!!!!! huggers, Robin

I just love hearing stories like that.
As I was reading your story I was thinking back to my dances in 7th grade . . . boys didn't want to dance and the girls were all starting to get cliquey (sp??). Some things never change, huh?
Sounds like that on top of the typical momma bear protecting her cub thing, there is also the added feeling of protecting a cub that we THINK might need a little more help! I'm so glad that this night turned out well for Emily and YOU Susan!!
BTW - Jason would be one of the boys to hang out at the pizza table the entire night!

That's wonderful that she had a great time! As for that group of girls...UGH! For the most part, girls that age are either really nice or stink - glad the nice ones included her and she had a good time! The stinky ones would be like that to anyone who was not them anyway.

Wow ! Q , that's so great ! The middles school here, you can't even get in when you drop the kids off for a dance. On top of it...next year the middle school will be 5-8 here ! ....and the 1st dance of the year, it's a bus trip to the riverboat for a dinner cruise of downtown Pittsburgh ! I freaked when I had to drop Matt off for that last year. My only consolation is that hopefully when Mer gets to middle school, at least Sam should be there too & hopefully he'll watch out for her.
