I know there have been multiple threads over the years regarding the best type of glasses to get, and I was hoping someone could give me a quick refresher course before Ethan goes to the doctor on Wednesday.
I looked through old posts and saw numerous references to flexible frames. Is there a particular brand that is good, and where would I find them? What have you all done about those cute little noses our kids have with the almost non-xistent bridge?
What tips do you have for keeping them on? Any and everything you could share would help. Thanks!

Laura,
Katie has the Flexon Kids. I think any of the titanium flexible frames would work. The theory is that they can twist and bend them and they will not break.
Katie is pretty rough on her frames when she puts them on and off.
Flexon frames can be bought at Wal-mart or most optometrists offices.
Good luck and let us know how the visit goes.

Laura,
Paige has Disney Frames - Flexible Marchon is what is on the side of them. They have been awesome, she bends both arms completely out at one time and they have never broken. They have "stretched" - but I bring them into the eyeware store and they bend them right back - they have showed me how to do it, but I'd rather have them do it. As for the bridge of her nose - this was difficult, and we tried and tried different things, what we ended up with was a bigger set of nose pieces which are clear rubber - so they grip whatever she has) and they are longer down the length of her nose, not round so they get sweaty and slide. If you can follow that, lol.
As for keeping them on - well, as everyone on Uno said to me when I was distraught about her constantly taking them off, it will come with maturity, and it sure did - she will be 6 and for the last year she WANTS them on. Huge change.
Good luck.
Deb

We use Flexons too... They are the only kind we've had any luck with, as far as not breaking. They are pretty expensive (just glasses in general, not necessarily just Flex-ons), and our Walmart didn't carry them small enough for Cole's size, and wouldn't special order them. I did find an on-line store that I could get most any style for around $98.00, plus lenses (about $90.00 through either go-optic or the optical center), but it was still about $100.00 cheaper than our optical center. The only drawback is that you kind of have to know the size of the temples, bridge and a couple of other measurements. The site, if you're interested, is www.go-optic.com The shipping was quick and I didn't have any problems with them at all.

Laura, what helped Justin was that they bent the ear piece to hug around his ear, ok so he kept eating the nose pieces off and we now have our own little stash

I bought Jennifer's glasses at Walmart and she has their brand of flexons. I wanted to get her a wrap around ear piece so her glasses would stay on, but it wouldn't fit her glasses. I did buy a sports strap to hold them on and they work fine. That was mainly to keep them on if she bent her head down..seeing how she has no bridge to hold them on. She is doing really good with her glasses.

Jordan has the Flexible glasses, and they are great. The cheapest place I found was Sam's , I just took his prescription there . At the eye doctor they would of cost me 290.00 , at Sams they were 150.00. Sharen

Hi there! What you do about the bridge and nose pads on those cute little noses is...you get the optician to switch out the regular little plastic/silicon nose pads with what is sometimes called a saddle bridge. You can see a drawing of one on the site below on page 8. www.marchon.com/MarchonWeb2002/Prof.%20Courses/Dispensing%20Eyewear/dispensing.html Fig. 8. Conversion of pad bridge to saddle bridge. Conversion to saddle bridges. Another means of relieving pressure on the sides of the nose is to convert a pad-bridge frame to a saddle- or strap-type bridge, being careful not to have the nosepiece rest directly on the youngster's bridge. The conversion is easily done by removing the fixed pads and substituting a unifit saddle bridge (for example, Marchon's strap bridge (Fig. 8). Be careful, though, to make sure the frame bridge clears the nasal crest of the patient's bridge. These things are great, and while they don't always keep the glasses up, they work better than anything else we have tried.

Cassie does not have flexible frames, she has hard plastic glasses. The arms twist and stretch some, but have only broken once. They were only $18 to replace. I got them at WalMart as her "spare pair" but like them much better than her first pair. The nose pads on the first pair left red marks and dents on her nose. I have had glasses do that before and didn't like them at all, so I switched to hard plastic frames w/o nose pads (just molded plastic). I found elastic straps to hold Cassie's glasses on. I put two pictures ofher glasses in her Uno Mas Album so you can see the strap.
Well, I'll try again tomorrow to put the pictures there!

Thanks you guys! I knew there had been much conversation as it relates to glasses, and I remembered that many of you talked about the flexible frames, and thought you had said you got them at Wal-Mart. I checked at our local Wal-Mart (we just got a new super Wal-Mart) and they didn't have them. Said that they were being clearanced, so they didn't get them at this new store. Those of you that got them elsewhere, did you just get them through your regular doctor?
The saddle bridge looks like just the ticket, thanks Tricia. If Ethan needs glasses I want to get them as quickly as possible. The only other possibility is that he is self-stimming, although that seems a rather odd way to self-stim. He does seem to be doing it less this week. Hopefully, we'll know tomorrow! Thanks again, everyone. I hate to re-invent the wheel when I know you guys have already been there, done that.

OK, no glasses, but not because he doesn't need them. We have no idea WHAT he needs. Ethan had a complete melt-down in the doctor's office yesterday. He freaked out when we went in the exam room and he saw the equipment.
My eye doctor is the BEST, and was very patient with him, just held him for about 20 minutes, and Ethan exhausted himself crying and fell asleep on my doctor. Gotta love that guy, huh? He has a son in his 20's with cerebral palsy, so he truly understands. He isn't an opthamologist, is an optometrist by training, but is the best eye doc I've ever been in a room with. I used to work for a VERY large vision company, and he was their head of research and development, so he is always on top of the newest stuff.
He said Ethan's eyes would need to be dilated to get an accurate reading, but asked me to give him a couple of days to get back to me, because he was checking into a type of pediatric screener that uses a laser and gets a reading in about 10 seconds. He had a call in to a doctor who already has one, and wants to hear back from her. I'm very hopeful that this will be as good as he has heard.
I left there quite upset yesterday though. For some dumb reason, I was feeling like I failed my little guy. I know that doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'm almost sure he needs glasses, and I was unable to do anything about that yesterday. And it just seemed wrong and unfair.
He has had multiple swallowing studies at U of M, and a couple of them were EXTREMELY traumatic. For one of them they strapped him onto a table with his arms secured above his head, and were twisting him this way and that. He was terrified and felt like he was falling, and I kept banging my head on the equipment trying to stay close enough for him to see me. I got lots of radiation exposure that day, LOL! I was sooooo upset about how they performed that study, but he really needed it done to make sure his intestinal bypass was performing correctly. Ever since then he has freaked out when he is taken in a room with lots of medical equipment. It's just not fair, ya know? It makes me sad that walking into an eye doctor's office terrified him. He was literally shaking with fear. Ugh. Thank God my eye doctor is such an awesome guy. He was the bright spot in that situation!
Thanks for letting me vent.

Oh, Laura, I totally understand! Nicholas has been the same way since he had his heart surgery just over a year ago. Doesn't want anybody to mess with him at all! Won't even let a stethescope touch him! It's awful to have to see our kids go through all they do, and then be so terrified, with good reason! They've been poked and prodded and twisted. So unfair. Sounds like you have a great eye doc, though. And how wonderful that he's going the extra mile to find equipment to make this easier on Ethan! I also wanted to share this with you. Nicholas LOVES Elmo, so for Christmas he got the DVD Elmo goes to the Dr. He's been watching it, and now he'll play with me, using my stethescope. He'll listen to me, let me listen to him, he'll look in my throat, let me look in his and check his ears. This is a huge improvement! Before he wouldn't even let me near him with a stethescope! We havn't had to test it out at the actual doctor's yet, though! Anyway, I hope your next visit goes better and he gets his little glasses, cause we all will need to see a picture! ;D
