OK OK, I know I'm one of the ones that thinks we parents of kids with disabilities or friends/family/loved ones of such should have thicker skin and not be so easily offended and here's me admitting to not having it yesterday:
Kaylee was home sick Monday and Tuesday-went to the doc first thing Monday morning--struggled with getting Kaylee to allow them to do a strep test. (She's too big to force--like holding her arms-I feel she needs to do it on her own) Finally she opened her mouth for mere seconds (amazing doc) and did it and then cried. She just hates strep tests. (Don't we all) She does a blood test better then a strep test..
Test came back negative-but they sent it out to the lab anyway. Diagnosis was bad sore throat. Drink liquids. Did that all day Monday and Tuesday (she was up all day playing, watching movies and Tuesday afternoon went outside to shoot hoops with the neighbor boys). Her voice sounded sore (hoarse) and she had a bit of a cough. No fever. No runny nose. Wednesday morning I didn't make her get up. She gets up 30 minutes late. Gets herself in the shower - comes down to breakfast all dressed for school. Took her to school Wednesday with a bottle of water and some cough drops.
So, Wednesday at about 11:15 I get a call-the school office saying "Kaylee's teacher would like to speak to you" so they put her through and she says "Cindy, Kaylee's really sick. She's like the walking dead. Lethargic and tired. And she just coughed-- I swear it sounds like she has bronchitis. I think you should come and get her-she shouldn't be here." Well, I was not happy. To say the least. First of all--if a kid is sick (fever or throwing up) then the office calls because the kid is in the health room. The office obviously wasn't willing to do that because the teacher is who called me-through the office. I think it is highly unusual for a teacher to do that-and I also think that there were probably a few 'typical' peers that were coughing-(Oregon in March) and may even have appeared a little tired (not concentrating on their work) but the classroom teacher undoubtedly would not be calling their parents to come and get their child. This goes back to the whole idea that our kids are evaluated ALL THE TIME and analyzed. They are not treated like the general school popluation. -
Now, some of my friends in book club took this whole scenario to mean that the classroom teacher cares about Kaylee more then other kids. That she was doing her and I a favor. I took offense, thinking she's saying I had no business letting her go to school.
Probably I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder because we're going into this placement meeting soon and I know that the staff tend to disagree with me about Junior High placement-
Doesn't it frustrate you though when a "school professional" makes you feel incompetant??
good news is I had already done an hour workout at 24 hour fitness--I had to miss a few days with Kaylee sick and it was driving me nuts-excercise is my only sanity break in life these days! (well, that and a screwdriver or two...)
Kaylee came with me shopping after I picked her up from school and we found swimsuits for Florida--
Doc called at 6 pm to say the lab came back--AND IT WAS STREP--so I felt like an idiot-
I can hear you all laughing at me now..
