I had a conference with John's Kindy teacher yesterday, and she is just thrilled with his progress. She is going to recommend he go on to first grade, with his 1:1, and obviously with some provisions, but she feels it is truly the best place for him. He currently visits a special ed teacher about 2 hours a week (he is in full time K) and next year we expect that time to increase somewhat, as first grade will be so much work and so little play. He has made friends, plays appropriately and just has a great time in K.
He has mastered all his letters, sounds and can write almost all letters. He is working on blending the sounds on simple 3 letter words. This is coming slow, but he is such a hard worker. The teacher gave me a list of about 50 sight words to get memorized by next year, and gave me some ideas about how to learn them. He can write most numbers 1-9, however his math skills are not very developed. (Takes after his mother!)
Also, he has a terrible time with rhyming. Any others out there with some suggestions/sympathy??? He seems to have a hard time with phonological stuff-
He can identify the sound at the beginning of a word, but the end is very tough. It's kind of funny because he really doesn't use ending sounds in his speech, and this has helped somewhat, calling attention to these sounds.
Anyhow, I am a proud Mom and am really thankful for the staff I have working with him as they really care and want him successful.
IEP next month..... Lets see if I can keep the good luck all through that.
