We've been in our new house in a new state for about 2 weeks now. This morning it finally happened. Someone forgot to lock an outside door behind them and JT went for a "walk". Not only JT, but also our St. Bernard named Hannah. I noticed it was quiet, at the same time saw the front door was open. My heart fell, I looked out the front door, there was Hannah in our next door neighbors yard. I yelled into the house that everyone was needed immediately to look for JT. I went flying out of the house, up the drive way and saw the little bugger a few houses down heading for the lake, barefoot of course. He knew he was in trouble when I caught up with him. The rest of the family was out scurrying around after the naughty dog.
When we got back in and had our big family talk about locking doors behind us, emergency plans etc. At the end of it all, my daughter says "hopefully, if there is ever a next time, we'll be dressed so we're not out running through the neighborhood in our PJ's again." I thought about it and she is right! We must have been quite the site!

so scary.....I worry about this all the time...the neighbors behind us have horses and also a small pond near their barn. Eric loves to look at the horses, so I have a fear if he ever gets out without us knowing, he will make a bee-line for them. The pond scares the bejeebies out of me...and I can't swim! Maybe we should both take some lessons at the Y.. Glad everything was ok...hug that boy for us!

Glad everything turned out ok. Adam took off on us too last summer. We only live 1/2 block from the beach area. I noticed the door was open, went out and heard screaming . There was a lady bassically sitting on Adam at the curb screaming our name. I knew the lady from when Adam was in daycare. We had chain locks on everydoor but he had figured how to unlock them so now we bought alarms (really cheap, we got them at Wallmart for $5.00 a peice) it works with a magnet, so as soon as someone opens the door a very loud BEEP sounds come on. I made Adam open the door and when the alarm went off he went almost 2 feet back on his butt. Never touched the door since. ;D

Funny how those stories are so funny when it's not your kid!! LOL I'll admit I was chuckling at your story Dawn, but I do know that awful feeling when you live with a runner and you realize they have escaped. Ahh yes, barely clothed . . . Jason was brought home by the police one early Saturday morning in nothin' but his boxer shorts! Yes, me and Brian were in our pj's going, huh? what's going on?!!! Alarms were promptly installed that day. Jessie

I am glad you found him safe and sound. Yes I too laughed at the picture in my head of you and your family in your PJ's.....but it was VERY short lived as I heard my daughter yell from the living room. Yup....Andrew figured out how to open the back door and was out on our deck!!! We have a "push down" style door handle ....you know.....all you have to do is push it down and pull. Uggggggg Guess you all know what do-it-yourself project we'll be working on this weekend.

Oh dear Trisha! Good luck on making your house Andrew escape proof! We did pick up some of the door magnet type alarms. Those are going on our house tonight.
Seems like a pretty strong trend of escapers and kids with DS. Why do you think that is?
My first thought is NO FEAR, combined with delayed communication. Maybe I need to teach JT the sign for outside? He'll sign "car" when he thinks a car ride would be nice. He's got the concept of fear down, he just doesn't get potential danger!
Any thoughts?

LOL.. oh man Chester!!! I remember when we first moved here and the time Russell got out because Kevin decided his painted walls in the hallway were too precious for the gate to be put up.... Russell got out and I woke up in fear really early in the AM... and yep.. ran out in my pj's to find him with the neighbor's across the street! Then he got out another time ONLY in a diaper!!!! Neighbors 7 doors down called the cops because they didn't know who he was... my mom looked out side to see Russell being held by a cop in a diaper! NICE!
I am clueless on teaching fear.... that is tough! I would maybe just suggest a flyer and submit it to all the neighbors telling about JT so they know who he is, where he lives and can help keep an eye on him... JUST in case!
