This is always a big weekend for Emily each year, and this year it seems to have been more exciting than ever before!
Every April, Emily goes to a sleep-away camp for six days. It has always been an awesome experience for her and she always learns so much while she is there! We noticed how much she has grown up in the past year though.............she really helped get packed for camp, she talked about what she would do while she is there, she talked about her counselor, etc. I took her out for lunch today and then we headed to the camp.......not a nervous bone in HER body!! She was SO eager!! As soon as we parked the car, she looked around and sees over 100 counselors (and ALL of them wearing identical bright red tshirts) and says "So, WHERE is Andrea"????? She gladly helped me put the sheets on her bed and after about 10 minutes of chatting with Andrea (the counselor), she says "Ok Mom, you can leave now". She walked me to the van and told me 10 times how much she'd miss me and that she loved me and that was it!
This is her 4th year at this camp, and I think she feels like a PRO. She'll get to ride horses, do a ropes course type of thing, have a dance on Thursday evening, a talent show, cooking classes, lots of time for basketball, arts and crafts, ride in a canoe, etc. I've been home only 2 hrs and miss her like crazy!!!
Also............last night was the annual awards banquet for the group she does various sports with. (It's called Structured Athletics for Challenged Children) The banquet is a big deal, and she looks forward to it each year. There is a nice dinner, awards and recognition for each sport that the athlete has been involved in, a video of all the sports, and then a dance. They offer basketball, bowling, baseball, soccer, karate, and gymnatics and Emily has always done every single one of them except karate. After watching the karate video, I'll bet she'll want to do that too!!! I can't remember the last time I saw her have as much fun as she did last night. We did a nice tribute to the woman who organized this sports program, and she deserved it.............but what melts my heart each year is to see the pride on the face of each athlete as they get their awards. There were no dry eyes in that room!!
