Hi all!!! ;D We are starting Andrew in hippotherapy tomorrow afternoon and I just thought I would leave some info here for anyone who was interested. I looked into this therapy awhile ago and for some reason thought it was really expensive so I kind of dropped the idea. I don't know why but I decided to call my insurance company last week and guess what I found out? They will pay for it!! All I have to pay is my co-payment (like I would for a doctors visit) when I go. Now I don't know if every insurance co will pay for this, but it might be worth a try if anyone was thinking of this therapy and thought it was too expensive. For some reason, I didn't think any insurance would pay for it....but I was wrong! I thought I would leave this for anyone interested because another mom I was talking too didn't think any insurance would cover this either. She called her insurance co and they will also cover it!! Yeah! Good luck...and happy trails!!!! YEEHAWWWW -Trisha

Justin has been going for the past three years with his school, next year he will be in 1st grade and doesnt get to go anymore with the school, but the lady that runs it said I can still bring him on my own, here it is free to anyone with any kind of disabltiy, Justin loves it and I think he will miss it, I take him on my own during the summer. I know my insurance will not pay for it we asked before we found this place that does not charge.
Be sure to take lots of photos of Andrew on his horse.

We don't really do hippotherapy yet, but we DO have a "Personal Pony" (www.personalponies.com). GREAT organization! We hope to start doing some stuff with our dd. Need some equipment. Her PT has some experience in this, so that should help. It seems to make lots of sense to me. What exactly do you do?
Yours in Christ, Kathy

jameson has been doing some kind of horse therapy for 2 years now.
There is "therapeutic riding" which is not covered by insurance companies but "hippotherapy" should be covered by any insurance company that covers "physical therapy". When jameson does "hippotherapy" the than that means its a PT is part of the riding process. So check and see if the hippotherapy people take insurance.
Therapeutic riding does not do any kind of physical therapy but is more for animal interaction.
For jameson it made a huge difference in his balance issues and speech. He loves it.
Over the years i have had to pay as much as $35/week to cover just the horse care (and insurance covered the rest) and that was for a one hour session.
I highly recomend this to anyone who can do it.

I have always wondered about this.. but I can't see Russell on a horse! I know.. I am limiting him.. and I need to NOT do this.. but I can't see it! We have places here... maybe I need to change my way of thinking!

Yes hippo-therapy is covered under some insurance policies. Chris has Not done the hippo-therapy, as for him it wasn't needed but he has done horse riding therapy for 8 years now and I HIGHLY recommend it to ALL ;D ;D For 8 years he has gone for one hour weekly and we were very lucky to have a local foundation pay for the entire 8 years Even if ones insurance doesn't pick it up I have found there really are many resources out there if you look A~ I vote try it for Russell OMG I bet you will be sooooo surprised what you see come from it CC ~

I guess since my insurance wont cover PT it wont cover hipoo-therapy so I guess its a good thing he gets to go free with his school, plus the place he goes to is free to anyone that is disabled, he loves it, it was hard to see him up there on that big horse but he was ok with it. Becky

A ~ here is just one link there are really tons on this subject, but maybe this one will help some or not LOL www.wayofthehorse.org/Articles/horse-therapy.htmlFor Chris I can tell you for sure it not only made a BIG BIG difference in his balance and being able to deal with "Open Space" as he had troubles with that BUT OMG it has made a BIG difference in his confidence and speech too Again just to share Chris just does the horse riding therapy NOT the hippo-therapy. Whats the difference you may ask, Hmmmm not really sure to be honest BUT I am sure someone here can explain the difference CC ~

Oh my gosh, I'm sorry guys I didn't see the replies to this thread before I posted a new one. Yes...I think hippotherapy is using a physical therapist and the horse and therapeudic riding has no therapist.
I'm so happy to hear that you all have had positive experiences with this.

My son's posture improved dramaticaly. He used to be very, very swaybacked. Now he sits and stands correctly. Not quite military straight, but quite nicely. Not just on the horse but always.

Laura has been doing hippo-therapy since she was 17 months old!! I think it is wonderful and has helped tremendously with her pre-walking skills. We are on break due to weather, but it should resume in the next couple of weeks. We are so excited!! Laura's riding is covered under EI, so we don't pay any out of pocket expense. She receives half an hour once a week.
