In addition to my older son with Ds I have a younger son with cerebral palsy. My older son is on the waiting list for the Medicaid MR waiver. My younger son was also because our county considers cerebral palsy a related condition. Last year my younger son was removed from the waiting list because it could not be proved that he is mentally retarded. (He has severe CP and has no way to communicate.) I have been trying to get him on the elderly and disabled Medicaid waiver. It does not offer as much, but it is easy to prove that he is disabled. I am told that he must be tested to prove if he is MR or not for this waiver also. Why? They do not require a test to prove if he is blind or has aids or not (those are other categories for waivers). So if he is not getting the MR or blind or aids waiver why test for MR or anything other than is he disabled? So I give up and try to schedule this test. Of course there is a waiting list just to see the Dr. But, the kicker is that Medicaid will not pay for the test because it is not medically necessary. The cost is $150 and hour and the Dr. will need 5 to 7 hours for interview, testing, report writing and follow up interview. This could cost over $1000!

That's not right!!! What state are you in ? Here in Indiana, I had to have Collin tested before they would put him on the list and they paid for that. Connie

We live in Virginia. When I first called the Community Services Board to find out what services were available because I have 2 children with disbalities, they suggested that the boys be on the MR waiver waiting list. The wait was 10 years or more, but at least they could get on the list. There was no test; just 2 nice nurses visiting at our house. The rules have changed, and I don't know what the new rules are. I might be able to use one of the tests they've done at school.
