We are thinking of having Adam join a soccer team. He is 8 years old and loves balls. He is a pro at basketball. Out of 10 shots from the blue line he only misses 2 or 3. He even dribbles. The teacherr is amazed, and so are we as we have never thought him that. It just comes natural to him. He also has a good kick. The only problem we have is either to put him with kids his age, as they may understand more or younger kids. If he gets a whole of that ball I'm sure he will run and refuse to share. ;D ;D ;D That's where I figure the older kids may understand more. I would appreciate any input.

Would having him join a Special Olympics soccer team be out of the question?

Claire, Collin is 6 and has played soccer for the last 2 years in a 6 and under league. He is eligible to move up this year but I chose to keep him back because I was afraid that he would get hurt because even though the 8 and under league is not suppose to be competitive it is really really competetive. Sarah just started playing on a special needs team. She had her first game last week and I had to miss it! She is the youngest and smallest on her team. She sure looks cute in her uniform.

We don't have Special Olympic where I live. Adam being the only child with Down syndrome in our small community would make a 1 man team. ;D So he'd be sure to get that ball and run with it. Even the adults with special needs here have to travel to the Special Olympic, about 3 hours away. It's a shame and I am always trying to do new things for our community to involve people with special needs, but it's hard being the only mom to fight the battles. The other moms have older children like in the 20's to 30's and have just accepted the fact that that is how it is, so they don't really get involved unless I do something and invite all of them, like Christmas parties and such. Last year I had 93 people invited for our Christmas party and only 2 of us to prepare the whole celebration, gifts, music and meal. It must be really nice for all of you to be able to sit together with other parents who walk in your shoes and laugh at the kids when they do goofy things. I still laugh at it, but sometimes get funny looks!
