I know there's been a thread about this movie before, but my family just rented "The Ringer" and we all really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure at first, but knowing the NDSS was endorsing it, we decided to give it a try.
The actors who played special olympians were FANTASTIC...and they all had intellectual disabilities. I commented to my husband that I hope Joy has half their spunk when she's an adult because they were hilarious! The storyline was predictable, but there were so many funny lines and great physical comedy.
At first I was a bit miffed because they were making some "tard" jokes, but what I did like was that when a character referred to the athletes as "tards," someone else was there saying, "hey, that's unacceptable."
On the DVD there are deleted scenes, and I suspect that Special Olympics or NDSS may have vetoed some of them because they were a bit offensive. But overall I give the movie two enthusiastic thumbs up, and would recommend it to all of you.
Thanks for reading my unsolicited movie review! ;D

Jenifer...I liked it too...and we knew several of the athletes in it. Not the greatest movie ever made...but very enjoyable.
You are right...they used terms like "tards" to teach people about the not using the word....You can't teach people not to say something if you don't tell them what it is you dont want them to say...LOL.
I think its a great movie for older grade school kids and middle schoolers. I didn't know it was out...but think I will have it sent to Katie and her family. I know Em would love it.

I didn't think the movie wasn't that bad. I went with my boy-friend.
I had the problems with the first scene's of course. I don't like name calling. I lived with it in elementary school so I am sensitive to it. After that though it wasn't too bad.
I liked it when the guy who was on the computer and the lead actor, Johnny Knoxville, walked in and put his things on the first bed he saw. They guy at the computer told him to move to the next bed instead. He was a cranky guy by nature I think. Anyway, Johnny had done something to his tape or CD I am not sure, but the cranky guy got mad told him to he broke his tape and he did it during the day or something like that. For some reason I thought that was funny. What I liked the most was that the other athlete's knew something wasn't right with Johnny Knoxville. They had seen right through him. This is my message to the world, don't count us out. We can read human behavior. We do notice. They did.
I thought the movie was funny in certain places such as the taller guy with blonde hair that wore glasses. And the guy that was funny but didn't know it. Johnny gave him his medal. I liked him for some reason. It wasn't bad.
Has anyone heard of Bill Sackter? There was a movie about him and it was good too. I suppose none you know what I am talking about. Mickey Rooney played him. He lived in an instution and was let out after living there for most of his life. Bill learned how to take care of himself, got a job and a place to live. Of course he had some help in doing this. That movie was good! It was a tv movie.

However, only a couple of the actors who played the main athletes who actually have disabilities. Most of the were played by non-disabled actors (I've seen several of them in other movies like "Barbershop" and "Bubble Boy").

I also saw this movie with my 2 older boys. They LOVED it! Me? Well...I don't know, I was kind of expecting more from it. Don't get me wrong...it wasn't a bad movie just kind of ...not what I was expecting. Although it did have me laughing. I would recommend it for young teenagers. I didn't know some of the actors didn't have disabilities. I liked them all anyway. -Trisha

Well, I attempted to head to the Mccy D's Red Box to return two movies and get that one for Regan.. but I headed to a diff one because I had to also go to the store.. and there wasn't a Red Box at that one... so.. I had to get back home.. and didn't get it. Regan was bummed... we will definately be getting it in the next day or two. I will attempt again to find a diff Red Box and return and get that if I can!

I bumped this thread up because I finally got around to watching it. I thought "Jeffy's" roomate Billy was the STAR of the movie...he was absolutely hysterical. The movie wasn't as good as some of the Farrely's other stuff....but it had an excellent message and was defintiely less offensive than I was afraid it was going to be and pretty harmless. I would let my boys watch it. Debi.....I do remember that other movie you referred to with Mickey Rooney...I was pretty young I think when it was on as a TV movie....but I remember being moved by it. Allisa OMG I thought "Jeffy's " roomate was absolutely hysterical as well. He was my personal favorite in the movie. AND Debbie I too thought the roomate saying " you scratched my cd" and the greatest LOOK on his face was too too funny also. I think the fact he kept saying it throughout the movie, and in the end when they hadn't seen each other for a while what hasta be declared by Jeffys roomate ? yOU GUESSED IT... lol,,, I laughed at the part as well. Sounds just like my girl sometimes.....
