I would like to share with you the info that our DSACO (Dawn Syndrome Association of Central Ohio) wanted to keep as a secret. The money collected from the donation of Buddy walks and so, is stolen by a treasure of DSACO (about $250k). For some reason (to keep that private) they did not want to sue the treasure and recover the money. I have a letter which states this fact; I will scan and post it here later. Also, they are giving away the money as a scholarship to someone who wants to be in medical field. Why?! That is very weird to me, just another way to steal the money!? We have so many problems providing a day-care for our kids with DS and they instead of creating the after school day cares and using the money on that, are giving money way?! The money which are collected by Down syndrome association for children and adults with DS are giving to someone else who doesn’t have DS. I am very mad, sad, and angry at this fact. I have lost interest in DSACO and Buddy walk in Central Ohio – I do not trust that people who are running the DSACO. Do you know how your DSA’s are using the donated money? Do you check on that? Please share on that. Alice

Hi Alice,
I had heard about that on another board I visit - it's a board for Board members so that could be why it was being discussed there.
Our local Ds group is still small and we have a teeny tiny budget, so there is no way that our funds can be misplaced, misused, etc. I can see where larger organizations may have problems . . . but it just takes one person to be a thief, it doesn't necessarily make the whole organization bad.
That's very sad and pathetic when someone has to steal from a non-profit organization.

Yes.. I heard about this too!!! Is DSACO the Cincinnati one? They have a wonderful nice sized DSA I have heard!
Although St Louis is a decent size city, our DSA is on the small size. I don't know what all our funds go for.. I am now on their "education committee" and I know some of the funds will go to monthly workshops. And then Albert Pujols now has his own foundation which sometimes does stuff with our DSA to help out. We got a free meal for the family from Hardee's the other night due to them and the DSA together!
Alice.. I know that just sucks that someone stole the funds... when I read stuff like this... I always think... how BAD could it have been for someone that they felt the need to steal THAT much money!!!
A.

A. That is so sad!!! I know I do work with the board of a non-profit organization that provides Christmas to over 2000 needy children a year, spending well over $150000 over just that holiday season. Every boardmember and volunteer is insured and bonded to protect them against things like this. What on earth are people thinking!!! Connie

Why do they cover her if there was just one person?
I believe that there should be done an investigation and recover all money. That was not just a cash...
Interesting: that the woman is also having a child with DS.
I would like to find out if any family with DS had any benefits from the donated money. I am sure there are none.
So, why bother people to ask them for the donations?

Good Question Alice, I will be very interested in the response to your question:
"I would like to find out if any family with DS had any benefits from the donated money. I am sure there are none."
So what happens to the donated money?
I mean I sure could use some to provide my daughter with complete 100% care for the rest of her life.....ok I am being sarcastic, but what really does happen with that money?

Hey A, it is the Columbus DSACO. I received a letter in the mail about the stolen funds as well.
I think it is just awful that someone would steal that money----All those people who gave money, what a slap in the face! It surely makes me think twice about giving to charities. I really do not think there is any excuse for it.

Hey Alice, I just read your 2nd response.
We surely didn't benefit from any of the money. I didn't realize they weren't going to recover the money----I think that is wrong. I don't care if she's been a member for a long time or since the beginning, there is no excuse for stealing. I certainly can't overlook 250K.
