Have any of you ever heard of a banana allergy? We think Andrew may be allergic to bananas. Ofcourse this is the ONE favorite food of his. I noticed earlier this week after I gave him a banana he had trouble breathing and I had to use his neb machine. (VERY scary!)I thought it could have just been a coincidence, so I waited a few days (so there would be none left in his system) and tried the banana again this morning. Within 5 minutes he had a hard time breathing again. Yeah...I know...I made the poor kid have another reaction, but it was the only way I could tell if it was actually the banana or not. I'm going to call the Ped on Monday and get a referral to an allergist so I can be more prepared. To make a long story short..... I was wondering if any of you had a little one with a food allergy? Anyone with banana allergy?.....and if so, are there any other foods I need to be careful about? Any foods in the same "family" as a banana? Thanks in advance!!! -Trisha

I see no reason a child could not be allergic to bananas. We have countless allergies in my family from wheat to watermellon to dogs to alfalfa hay.

My odler son is allergic to peaches, peach juice or anything that has peaches in it, so I would think your son could be allergic to banana's, or even anything that has them in it.
Bananas are Justin's favortie so we would be in trouble if he couldnt have them.

Lol Becky, we're kind of in trouble here too. When I did a search for banana allergy it kept coming back with latex allergy for some reason. Not sure why. I'd like to know if anyone knows what family a banana is in . You know...if you're allergic to strawberries, stay away from rasberries because they're in the same family.....or if you're allergic to cantalope stay away from honeydew and watermelon because they're all in the melon family. But what does a banana belong with? I'm at a loss here. I guess I should have paid more attention in cooking class huh? ;D -Trisha

If you are allergic to:
You may have a reaction when you eat:
Ragweed: Bananas or melons such as watermelon and cantaloupe
Birch: Almonds, apples, apricots, carrots, celery, cherries, hazelnuts, kiwis, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, or potatoes
Mugwort: Avocados, bananas, carrots, celery, chestnuts, or kiwis
Grasses: Tomatoes
Hope this helps a little and let us know what the Dr tells you

I found out that sometimes children and adults may have or develop problems with glutten. I am not saying that every child and adult has this problem just because of the Down syndrome. I found this out from Dr. Brian Chicone when I was in Washington D.C. I have develop this problem and can't eat bread at all but I can tolerate some wheat in the form of a brownie or piece of cake or pie provided that I don't over due of course. I also developed a stomach allergy to onions.

The banana family includes arrowroot (sometimes used as a thickener) and plantains. Clarice is allergic to over 20 foods. The main foods are gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats), eggs, and casein (dairy), nuts, and anything fiborous (celery, raw carrots, lettuce, grape skins, apple peels...) It's quite a list. I've become quite adept at cooking in different ways. In order to find all of the allergies we started with skin tests, which showed nothing. I then did the elimination diet, but kept having problems because I would never eliminate all of the allergic foods at the same time. (I was beginning to think she would just need to live on rice.) Our pediatrician found a company called ImmunoLabs which ran a huge test on foods and gave me a long list with how sensitive she was to them. It also broke the reactions into IgE (true allergies) and IgG (food intolerances/sensitivities). Bananas were on her list, but the reaction was mild.
