I know a lot of our kids deal with sinus infections but I am wondering if anyone has had any sucess in getting rid of them or cutting down on them? Hannah has chronic sinus infections and is now resistant to two antiobiotics. She has had her tonsils and adnoids removed and been on numerous allergy medicaitions to try to prevent them. I had another appointment with her ENT and then they cancelled it and rescheduled it until Aug. I was going over her school records and noticed that this spring was worse for her so I am thinking maybe a allergy situation even though she has tested negative for allergies. This situation has really interfered with her school work as she is not willing to work hard when she is not feeling well. Have any of your kids had sinus surgery and if so any thoughts? I know nothing about it. It sounds pretty invasive but I am getting more and more concerned. Thanks- Heather

I'm so glad you posted about his Heather. Alethea is 20 months and is on her way to chronic sinus infections. She just finished a 10 day dose of Augmentin and still the infection wages war. She is now on a 20 day dose of Omnicef. If she is still suffering we're off to the ENT for adnoid discussion. She had tubes put in in Feb. which has taken care of the ear infections, but now we're dealing with sinuses. I would like to avoid adnoid removal.
I just feel like doctors just want to cut everything out of our children.
So you're saying adnoid removal didn't help your Hannah with sinus infections?
My next step is to look at diet and try chiropractic...How is Hannah's diet? Lots of dairy? Sugar? White flour? The reason I ask is dairy causes mucus and sugar/white flour causes a decline in the efficiency of the immune system, therefore it can't fight the infections at the same rate.
I know not everyone out there are chiropractic fans, and I really don't know where I stand either, but chiropractors will say that allergies are a physical response from the body when it can't fight infections (something like that).
I don't know, for me, I guess I want to try what I can before putting Alethea through another surgery. If dietary changes and/or chiropractic don't work then what am I left with? Gosh, I don't even know if I'm making any sense!
Sorry Heather, I didn't give you anything to go on.
Any suggestions for this mom too would be appreciated.

I was going to talk about the milk too. Here is a link about milk and allergies.. it is a VERY known fact that milk in children causes the same stuff you are experiencing. www.milksucks.com/mucus.htmlIt's not that milk JUST causes mucous but in some children, the chronic sinus issues ARE milk allergies. Milk allergies are one of THE most common allergies in children. And milk allergies cause chronic sinus issues and cold like symptoms. You can also be have allergies to milk but not cheese or other things. With Russell, and his chronic reflux when he was younger, we had to omit milk from his diet for almost 2 yrs. I knew that milk allergies could cause sinus issues and with the reflux he had a chronic cough too. So, it seemed he was always "wet" or mucousy and asked our Ped if he could be a little allergic to milk.. his reply.. yes! And our PT who was very knowledgable about milk and allergies said Russell acted like the milk exaserbated things. So.. we omited it and did see some improvement. Not 100% improvement because of the chronic reflux anyway, but we did see an improvement. I would talk to your Ped about the milk... and maybe try taking it out of the diet. You can compensate for calcium with other calcium fortified foods. Also, does the docs really think it's an INFECTION each and every time? I know that some kids naturally have more infections.. but I always wonder. When Russell had his chronic coughs and snot nose stuff, we never did anti's. And if you were to hear Russell's coughs, you would think he had bronchitis or some kind of infection.. but never did. I am very against it and our docs were not pro-antibiotics either. So, I always get concerned... and I appologize now if I am overstepping my concernness and questioning your docs. Good luck!!!!! A .

My little Character who happens to be 12 years old I am sad to say has chronic sinus infections still now Tonsils and Adenoids out and not one bit of difference I kid you not I was told when he was tiny, he will grow out of this, hmmmm now the ENT is saying NOPE doesn't appear he will grow out of it, Hmmmm I do believe the next thing they want to do is a cat scan of his sinus area. Our Ped is very concerned about all the antibiotics Chris has been on since he was born. At this point for us the surgery with the tonsils was such a nightmare that both Colin and I agree that unless it is life threating nooooo more operations for our guy Hope you find the answer and if so PLEASE share with me CC ~

Thanks for all your replies. Hannah had the tonsil and adnoid surgery to try to help with the sinus issues and it really did help for about six months and now we are right back into it. She did have sleep apnea and this surgery really did help that situation greatly so I am still glad we did it. That is really interesting about food allergies, I guess I just never thought about that issue before(Duh!) I am really going to look into that more. Hannah's diet is HORRIBLE!!! It is something that worries me all the time. She is a total carb- oholic. She has severe food jags that last at least a year or more and refuses to eat if they are not the select few items. Right now she is really into dinner rolls- and they have to be a certain brand. She also likes pasta a lot. She does have other food choices but not a lot. She also LOVES milk. This really makes me wonder and I am really going to look into this angle. As far as the Dr. saying infection every time, I know the only way to tell is through a sinus x ray but we go on behavior a lot. When she starts a cold she does ok with it for a while but then she goes downhill fast with falling asleep in school and not wanting to do her work and also telling me she hurts(that took a long time for her to get specific with me)There are also other symotoms too, anyway I do tend to try to be conservative with the antibiotic issue but when we do go that route she feels so much better in a day or so nad I know we did the right thing by treating her. Her ENT is a great guy and very experienced with kids with DS so as soon as we see him I will bring this stuff up. In the meantime I am going to look into the food issue and maybe take another trip to the dietician. Thanks all!!!!! - Heather

Not Carter, but I had/have them something awful. I had very invasive sinus surgery and allergies. I have not had problems for years, but it has started coming back. Apparently the surgery only has a 5-6 year "guarentee". Oh the joy. I am very vigilant about the kids because of this. The surgery is, quite honestly, brutal, but I was in there 4 hours and had 3 dozen - yes, that IS true, 3 dozen - polyps removed from my nose and sinuses, reconstructed passageways and a deviated septum repaired. I said I think I have the most expensive nose i know of that looks exactly like it did when they started LOL!
