We made our yearly trip to the opthalmologist last week. JT will also be getting a pair of glasses for the start of the school year, just like his two siblings, thank goodness we have a co-pay on glasses! I have a feeling trying to keep glasses on JT will be our next BIG hurtle to jump.
The Dr. suggested getting a pair that hook way around his ears. We go tomorrow to try on glasses. I'm guessing that I'll have less than a second to see them on his face before he takes them off. This is going to be training from square one to keep them on.
Has anyone had experience with the glasses that hook around the back of their kiddos ears? My first thought is that he's going to bend the frames as he yanks them off. Maybe his second pair?

My son HATED any frames that had nose rests (don't know the proper term), were made of metal or hooked around the ears and held tight to his face.
He was very happy to wear his all plastic, no nose rest glasses. Twelve years later, all plastic, no nose rests.
Hope this helps.

Dawn, My son Collin is 6 and has had glasses for about 1.5 years and to my surprise it has NOT been the nightmare I was expecting. Collin has and older brother that wears glasses also so I think this has helped but he has realized that he can see better with them so he is starting to ask for them. Then after he puts them on will say. "I See" Collin wears Flexon frames with regular temples. I really don't think he would keep the ones that hook behind his ears on...I think the tightness behind his ears would send him over the edge along with the glasses. Collin has never thown his glasses but he has put them up so well that we couldn't find them for a week or two. We have taught him to put them on a shelf or give them to me or another adult which works out good until he finds a shelf we rarely use.
I have also found that if his glasses get dity he is more likely to take them off and put them up. So we try and keep them pretty clean. Connie

#1 get flexon frames!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #2 the optician should be able the bend the frames so the curve around the ears a little rather than getting the ones that hook all the way around the ears which may be uncomfortable. My eye guy just heats the ear things and bends them...the flexons for kids tend to be a little long so its easy to do. ask to see ones that have a longer ear thing...whatever that is called. also -- get the scratch resistent coating. usually an extra $40 or so but wayyyy worth it, especially when they fling their glasses! One more plus -- atleast at my optician -- the flexons have a 2 year warranty vs a one year. Every time I bring them in with a problem every single thing is covered for 2 years...which is very very nice. so ask about various warranties as well. good luck! laurie

Charlie is on his second pair of glasses. His first pair were just plano lenses for protection. And too small now. He got his bifocals after he got his IOL in right eye. They're getting a bit small. We've got a more recent script but there's not much change and we couldn't find any better frames. So, he's still in his second pair of glasses, though he probably should be on his third or fourth. We've always had him in the cable ear pieces. Seem to work well for him. But maybe we should look at different model frames and possibly something like a Chums retainer. Would be good to get lenses and frames that do a better job of getting the bifocal to disect his pupil. He mainly wears his glasses at school. Not too bad about taking them off. Glasses may help his distance vision a little, probably help his near vision much more. And may help to prevent him rubbing contact lens out of left eye. He's wearing his glasses in the school photo in his album. Not a very good photo of his glasses, but I don't have any all that better. Good luck, Bob

hi i work at an optical store and i also have a downs daughter, she is now 10 and wears her glasses with no problem, but when she first got them, they told me not to force her at first makingit such a negative experience that she would hate them forever, we tried the c-temples(around the ear) and sometimes those are uncomfortable if they are too tight, and we also opened up the nose pads so the glases fit right to her eyes and shortened the temples .......that didnt work because ever wore your glasses too close to your eyes???/ the best thing to do is gradually let him wear them when at the table or doing table activities and short periods of time, give advil if he complains from headaches from taking them off and on, carrie didnt, but her prescription wasnt that strong so we had time to experiment....they used the regular temples but cupped them to hug her head a little tighter...a good optician will make a good fit..temples can be cut to fit frm ear to eye length to fit securely also...the thing with her was , gradual and only when sitting or watching tv...then it got to where she forgot she had them on..........good luck

Chris has worn glasses since he was 4 years old, like Connie said as Collin, Chris wears the Flexon frames with regular temples. Honestly the day they told me he needed glasses I broke into a sweat just thinking about how we would due this LOL BUT he has been great. I started out by getting 2 pair, just in case, LOL He would hide them every now and then but all in all was really not a big deal. He will fall asleep in them and first thing in the morning before he gets out of bed reaches for his glasses and he did that way back when he was tiny. The day we picked up his glasses I said to him which video you want to watch and he picked and I said K, then put on these or you can't watch it. To my amazement he put them on He would remove them a few times during the video and I just walked over and put them back on him with no reaction and honestly we have never had a problem keeping them on him Best of Luck CC ~

Adam has worn glasses since he was 18 mths old. I found that the flexon that hook around the ears are the best, at least for Adam. RThe plastic flexon frames are light also so they don't feel so heavy, It took a while to get him used to them *about 4 tears)but it is the first thing he puts on in the morning without being asked. Although we went through several pairs in the first 3 years as he would either break them or hide them, we actually though of hot gluing them to his eyebroews. (Just joking of course) ;D
