I know that lots of us here struggle with this at various times, and someone posted this on another list that I frequent. This is honestly the best explanation of how the elimination process is supposed to work that I have ever seen.

I learned from this that although Ethan is doing very well with toilet training, he is having some difficulty coordinating the muscles used to release a BM.
Here is a link to info about how to treat constipation:

When re-visiting the site today to post it, I noticed that there is an option to participate in an online program to help with encopresis, which is a problem that can arise when children have chronic constipation. It usually begins with "stains" in the underwear, as if your child hasn't done a good job of wiping. If your child is chronically constipated, I really urge you to read these links!

They have an online program which has been through a pilot and a national trial, and they are planning additional trials. If you think you might be interested, here's the link:

I was really impressed with this, you guys! Ethan is doing wonderfully with toilet training, I haven't changed a "dirty" diaper in over a month, but we have seen him going "ribbons" of poop, which would indicate that he is having trouble coordinating the pushing and allowing the release of stool. I wouldn't have recognized that if I hadn't read this information!
