hi everyone,
i've been reading the board for a few days now and decided to introduce myself. my name is jen, my daughter chloe was born 6 weeks ago. we had her at home with the help of a couple of midwives. the labor was very long, but we were so glad when we finally saw our beautiful daughter. chloe was not gaining weight after a week, and my midwives sent me to a naturopath. she noticed a few characteristics associated with ds and sent us for some genetics tests. i was really surprised by all this, not really sure what to think. it took several weeks for the results from the genetics tests to come back, in the mean time we worked on getting chloe's weight up. we went to a pediatrician and a lactation specialist and i started pumping and giving her expressed breast milk because we discovered that she was not latching on correctly.
on january 28, the test results came back. at first, my partner and i were devastated. we had been in denial since she was tested because she looked so 'normal' to us. it took us a day or two to absorb the news, and now we realize that she is still our beautiful daughter who we love very much. she has since seen a cardiologist, and it turns out she has an atrial septal defect, a 6-7mm hole between the upper chambers. the cardiologist wants to wait and see her again in 6 months. he said if surgery was necessary, he would wait till she's 3 or 4 years old.
chloe is doing great, she's gaining back her weight. we're still working on her latch and she has had a few cranial sacral sessions which seem to help. i am trying to find out everything i can about ds. i am glad that i found this web site and look forward to getting to know all of you. i'll post some pictures soon, i'm trying to get a web site up soon, but taking care of chloe has been taking up most of my time, not that i mind one bit.
