I've been visiting Uno Mas! since my son was a baby, but haven't posted to this forum until yesterday. I thought I might as well introduce myself. My name is Susan and I am a single mom to Matthew who will be 15 years old this coming June. So many of you have young children and reading some of the posts sure brings back fond memories of Matthew when he was little. I am looking forward to getting acquainted with everyone.

Hello Cathy and Becky! Thank you for the warm welcome. Matthew turned three shades of red and ginned from ear to ear when he read that Becky thought he was handsome! I took a peek at your web page, Cathy. Your daughters are both just beautiful! We live just a bit north of Dayton, Ohio. I am self employed. I own and operate a pet boarding kennel. It's located on the same property as our home which has allowed me to work AND be a stay-at-home mom. This is a big plus if you're a single parent. Matthew is my only child and believe me, he makes everyday an adventure. He has been attending a private school for the past five years. He has made excellent progress there. He not only reads, writes and does simple math, he also studies and does well in Science, Health, Language Arts and Social Studies (his favorite class). He will be transitioning into the high school here next year. He is a friendly, outgoing, never-met-a-stranger kind of kid. His teachers at school recently remarked that they thought he would make an excellent activities director on a cruise ship because he like to make sure eveyone is comfortable and having a good time. Matthew loves just about any outdoor activity, even helping me in the kennel and doing yard work. He has been fascinated by the game of golf since he was 4 years old. For the past two years he has been a member of Special Olympics Unified Sports Golf Team and even managed to win a gold medal in his division at the state tournament both years. Here's a couple of photos. Matthew at one of the golf tournaments. This is a photo of Matthew taken during our vacation in Cancun last fall. SMILE! I once told Matthew he swims like a fish and he said, "NO, I swim like Matthew!" Okay, that enough bragging about my kid! Tell me about yours.... Susan

SUSAN: I love the underwater shot! He DOES swim like a fish! And Becky is right....Matthew IS a handsome guy. Does he like roller coasters? He and Emily might get along VERY well! She loves to swim, play basketball, and ride roller coasters.....and watch Disney movies. I'm not matchmaking or anything, but Emily has always liked older men! Can't wait to meet you both. And.....WELCOME TO UNO MAS!

Hello Susan P.
Matthew has never ridden on a roller coaster. I love 'em myself, but Matthew avoids those amusement park rides where he hears people screaming regardless of if it's in terror or delight. Emily loves swimming, Disney Movies AND basketball? That would surely win Matthew over! ;D

Hi Annie and Sonny! I'm happy to meet you! I remember well when Matthew was 8. That was when he started becoming very independent and didn't want "mom" to help him with some things anymore. It was a big adjustment period for me! Reading? Inclusion? No, I don't mind you asking at all. When Matthew was 7, he was in a special education class in the public school. His teacher told me that academics aren't taught in that class because "kids like Matthew" weren't capable of learning to read or write. It made me angry and I knew in my heart she was wrong. So I devised a simple method that worked on reading, spelling, printing and sentence construction and began teaching him at home. It worked great and he learned more quickly than I had expected! When Matthew was 8, I enrolled him in a private school where he would be included in regular classes. His reading teacher continued to use the same method I used at home for a about a year and moved on to more traditional methods as his level of skill increased. All the teachers there are wonderful and thanks to them, Matthew has made outstanding progress during the past 5 years. He not only reads, writes (in cursive, too) and does simple math, he takes all the same classes as the other students. Is Sonny included? And has he started on reading yet?
