Russell's mom's post about Oreo the bunny compelled me to share a recent observation about the way Joy is understanding loss right now. A couple weeks ago, we had to put our old cat "Bug" to sleep because she was just not doing very well. She was 16 and had always been part of Joy's life. When we explained to her Bug was sick and gave her a chance to say goodbye, she understood. She loved on Bug and said her goodbyes, and now in her mind, Bug is dead. She's in Heaven, according to Joy.
Today, we went to a store to get Joy's shoes for tap class and while there, I got her a little Curious George doll. She was such a good girl, and when we got there, she went right up to the counter and said to the clerk, "I need tap shoes." Then she went and sat right down for her fitting. I was so proud of her and the doll was a reward.
After we ran our errands, we were getting on the freeway and her window was down. You know what's going to happen next...Curious George went flying out the window (ok, Joy threw him out--some twisted experiment in cause and effect, I guess)! As you can imagine, Joy FREAKED OUT. She cried all the way home (40 minutes to be exact) and then moped around all night about Curious George. She was so sad.
I just thought it ironic that she was so able to let go of this cat she had known her whole life and not really give it much thought, but this doll that had only been part of her life for an hour caused such drama. I'm sure it's because it was new and she hadn't played with it much, but I was very intrigued as I compared the two losses.
I don't really have a point here. I'm just enjoying watching Joy grow and learn and begin to process and understand abstract concepts like death and loss. She's a pretty neat kid.
Thanks for listening...
