If anyone is out there reading, I need help and fast. Emily is giving me a tough time tonight. SHE WON"T SWALLOW. Doctor's of course are all off duty and I don't know what to do anymore. Any tips on getting her to swallow again? She did fine with a bottle this morning and with breakfast. I'm starting to panic.

Do you have any prescription pain medication . . . or even pain medicine that's not prescription strength? Our dr. sent us home with two different types (Tylenol w/codeine and Ibuprofin). We alternated every 2-3 hours. Without these medications, Logan had real problems. FYI - about 5-8 days after the surgery, the pain got a LOT worse again. We actually had to up the pain meds back to the amounts we used the first few days after the surgery.
Hope this helps!

Russell would only use a syringe also. Actually Robin here was the one who suggested it prior to Russell going into surgery and yep, that was the ONLY thing I could use to get fluids down him for a couple days. Russell had a really rough 2 days after his T&A this year. Sorry Emily is also. And also, like suggested, keep the pain meds down her as much as possible. Lots of people have to give pain meds like 30 min before feedings. And if she won't take the oral meds, I'd suggest a Tylenol suppository. We have to use those sometimes too. All kids respond differently after the surgery so just keep at it. She will drink.. she will.. but yes, it is frusterating. Push whatever liquids you can and/or popsicles, ect..... HUGS!!!! A.

Awwwwww Christine, I hate to hear that! My best advice would be what Adrienne said.........do whatever it takes to get her some pain relief. That is the reason she won't/can't swallow. Hopefully, you can get enough pain medication syringed into her mouth and down her throat (carefully.......I'm always worried about aspiration with any syringe use) that she'll get more comfortable. I know you said she wasn't swallowing, and that she drank a bottle this morning. Any chance she'd tolerate something like baby food or pudding? Those things can count as liquids and help keep her from dehydrating too.
Don't worry about the docs being off duty at all. They always have someone (if not themselves) on call 24/7. I'm not sure what the procedure would be in your area, but I'm guessing it is similar to here. I would call the hospital where she had the surgery (or the hospital this doctor practices from) and ask the switchboard person who is taking call for Emily's doctor. Ask her to page that doctor and when he calls you back (they'll do that), tell him your dilemna. Maybe he could order Tylenol suppositories?? She wouldn't enjoy having a suppository put in, but it would ease the pain. Sure wish we lived closer! I'd be happy to take care of your little gal while you got some rest! Susan

Christine I will tell you try and not panic, least for tonight. Chris had a very bad time after his T&A and went well over a week with no food or liquid, Man oh Man he would not even swallow his spit, no kidding he would just spit it out in a bucket Chris had to be readmitted for dehydration but it took a bit of time Soooo the only reason i am telling you this is tomorrow is Friday and the Docs will be in. In the mean time have you tried ice pops?? Hang in there girl I know easier said then done BUT as Susan said if you really are concerned call the Docs office they always have an answering service and can get in touch with whomever is on call. HUGS CC ~

Sorry you hit a bump with Miss Emily's T&A. You need to keep that little bug hydrated and medicated. Plying Charlie with yogurt and pudding helped some, though I'd rather he'd taken more fruit juice and water. Hope someone has already told you that may get over this discomfort and hit another period of increased discomfort 5-7 days post-op (part of healing process of removal of tonsils, scab over, then scabs come off, yuck). Little Miss Bug doesn't want to have to go back to the hospital, but we know one little lady w/ Ds who had to do that after T&A because mom couldn't keep her hydrated. Good luck. And keep us posted. Do I need to come over there? -- Bob

Thanks guys. Yup I did panic a bit here, but I never expected to see her so bad! Tylenol w/codeine was the biggest culprit in messing her up. God bless the syringe. Too tired to give you the long story, but let's just say this little bug gave her mother a run for her money. Thank goodness she's so cute.
