We had an IEP meeting for Joy yesterday because she has met three of the five goals we wrote in August, so we needed to write new goals.
She met her reading, math and social goals. Reading was to know 12 beginning sounds, math was to know her numbers 1-10, and social was to begin interacting with peers more, rather than playing alone.
With her August IEP, she was in special education 50% of the time, and general education 50% of the time. She is now in special education 22% of the time (48 minutes per day), and in kindergarten 78%.
I am very encouraged by this progress, and I feel that the majority of Joys success so far this year can be attributed to the new school district we are in. We moved right before school started because we had such an icky feeling about the school she would be going to. We definitely made the right decision.
Her teachers and the district people are so on the ball. The school principal has been present for both of our IEP meetings, which I have never experienced before. In our old school district, it was just the teacher and the speech pathologist. Yesterday, there was the principal, the special ed teacher, the kindergarten teacher, the speech pathologist, and the area education coordinator. Incredible!
They asked me what I want for Joy in the coming year...they actually wanted my input! Before the meeting, the special ed teacher met with the first grade teacher to see what skills Joy would need for success in first grade, and we sat down and wrote those skills as goals for her new IEP. It includes learning sight words, counting to 100, improving handwriting, and improving behavior. I am in awe that they are working this hard to prepare her for first grade. The special ed teacher in our old district said that Joy could just repeat kindergarten if she didnt do well this year. Our new school says NO WAY! She needs to move on with her friends.
Sorry for the ramble. Im really encouraged and wanted to share!
