i had meghan to the doc today (she has strep) and he said she sounds "wheezy" and asked if she'd ever been diagnosed w/ asthma or treated for it?
AND the answer was NO to both questions.
he said for now, we'll call it reactive airway disease...but if it reoccurs they change the dx to asthma.
i know little about this (except meds and stuff)...anyone have any good info for me?
thanks, laurie

Asthma is called reactive airway disease now. At least that's what Emmy's doc told me. If he says she sounds wheezy but didn't treat her, I think I would take her to an allergy/asthma specialist. My oldest had a "touch" of asthma when he was about 3 and we were given rescue meds for it. Emmy as well has just a mild case and we were given both a rescue scrip as well as a preventive scrip. I would be inclined to get a second opinion. Hope all goes well for you!

Nope.. none.. but I hope it's just a passing thing. The only issues with this was once when he was little he was wheezing while sick and we had a script for oral Albuterol. Then when he was a bit older we noticed evertime he swam in a pool he got "swimmers asthma" and we had to get a script for an inhaler just in case. We only had to use it a couple of times. We have never had any issues since nor do I know much about asthma as a whole.
Good luck!!!

When Andrew had pneumonia they said he had asthma but called it viral induced asthma. Yeah, I know...get's a bit confusing. In Andrew's case, if he gets a virus it brings out asthma in him. They said his lungs would only react as asthma if he was sick with a virus and therefore do not treat him as an asthmatic all the time. Does that make sense? We do have a neb machine with albuterol as well as prednisone but luckily we haven't had to use either since he has been home from the hospital. He does use an inhaler with flovent twice a day everyday as a preventative.
So, to sum up my ramblings here...lol....could it be that your daughter's lungs were just reacting to her illness? Maybe that's why your Ped is waitng to see if her lungs react this way again before giving a dx of asthma. Not sure. If she is diagnosed with asthma I would definately see a specialist. Good luck!!

apparently reactive airway disease is when it is a single incident. when it reoccurs, they then classify it as asthma atleast that is what my ped said.
thanks all for the input and advice. i was surprised cause i didnt notice any wheezing...and i'm usually really in tune with all that so we'll see. thanks again laurie

yup u are right. reactive airway disease is what dr.'s call it when the child has had 1 or only a couple isolated incidents. Then after there are several incidents they call it asthma. Olivia is excercise induced and when she gets a cold etc.She gets 3 breathing treatments a day 2 cromolyn sodium(intol)<--- help to build up strength in your lungs. Then she gets albuterol as needed and also has a huffer for school when she has excercise. Thats all folks gl it may be just an isolated incident. ((HUGS)) steff

Both my Sis and Dad had severe Asthma Nothing to fool with for sure Just curious this was MM's first time the Doc noticed wheezing and if they notice it one more time they will DX it as Asthma?? Just curious as both my kids and myself over the years have been to the doc with wheezing at one time or another and none of us have Asthma?? Maybe a check with a Doc that specializes in Asthma would be the route to go, if it happens again. Hopefully the antibiotics for the Strep will help with the wheezing too Let us know how she is doing, PLEASE CC ~

Hopefully MM is feeling alot better today. As for the Asthma, both Justin and Ashley have the viral induced, any upper respiratory bug it triggers it, we have the nebulizer with albuterol for Ashley and Xopenex for Justin (easier on the heart), Ashley also has the rescue inhaler which she uses during sports if she is even a little bit congested. Now Alyssa our oldest has the full blown Asthma, she has just been upgraded to moderate to severe, she basically can't do anything requiring physical exertion such as running, walking a distance etc, she is also allergy triggered. She takes a nebulizer treatment with 2 meds twice a day(Pulmicort and Foradil), asthmanex inhaler, Singulair, Claritin D, Albuterol inhaler, during an attack we start a 10 day dose of Prednisone, double the Pulmicort and start Flovent 110 inhaler for 2 weeks. Now on top of this she was just diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and just recieved her CPAP machine, they say it's borderline but because of the Asthma and the fact she sleeps waaay too much, she can come home from school at 2:10 lay down and be out til the next morning, with me running in waking her up and asking her if she's awake and ok. I would just keep an eye on her or ear I should say, but the wheezing could be croup as well, she may just need the extra help during the cold season or while she's sick, they can put her on a preventive during this time also. You can also have her seen by a Pediatric Pulmonologist, Alyssa is followed by one every 3 months, for pulmonary function testing. If you think you could get MM to take a deep breath and blow you may be able to ask for a peakflow meter, that way when she's better you can get her best reading and when she's sick or you suspect she is coming down with something you can check it and if it's lower you can also give that info to the doc when you call for a checkup-it's just a plastic tube with numbers outside with a little red arrow and when she blows into it the arrow moves to give you her reading, I think I seen digital ones at CVS....Good luck and hope she is feeling better.
