Just a warning, I'm complaining!
This is our third "no school day" in a row. Last Thursday we had snow flurries, literally a dusting, so school was cancelled. Friday we had two WHOLE inches of snow. Today, well today, it's two things, snow flurries AND a temp of zero.
It's one thing to have scheduled time off, but three days in a row of changes in schedules......AUGH! The first two days, we baked, we made paper mache, we played outside, we worked on math timings, etc. Today, they get the t.v. while I try to restore some order.
I'm trying to be patient, but we moved from MN/WI, we don't bat eyes over this.

Well, if makes you feel any better they canceled school in the mid-Michigan schools today too - due to the temp. It is cold, but dang just let don't let them go outside for recess, they'll make it through the day. At least that's my opinion!!! It was -7 degrees this morning when I got up, plus the windchill, that's about -20 degrees. Brrrrr
My sister is so funny. Her cable/internet is not working for some reason this morning and she's freaking out "I've never had my kids home and NOT had the internet at the same time, what am I supposed to do with them?!!" LOL Too cold to send them outside, I suppose. Guess she's going to have to get creative!

Minnesota here. The temp when I got up this morning was -22, with a windchill of - 40 or something. But yes, there was still school. The only time school has closed here for temperatures was in 1996 when I was on bed rest incubating Angela. The Governor ordered the closing of all schools because it was -40 with -80 wind chills. I see there are some schools here that are closed, but they're way up in northern MN, and I' think they're around -30 or so today.
The big problem is the kids that walk to school, parents that don't make sure their kids are dressed appropriately, and kids that stand out at bus stops. We have a long driveway, and even though it takes Angela F-O-R-E-V-E-R to walk down that hill, I waited till the bus was THERE before we went out. They can wait.

We've had the same thing here Dawn. Part of the problem in our area is that there are so many hills, that really do get treacherous for the buses. And our county is large, so you'd have kids who are able to get to school easily and others in the hilly areas who really aren't able to get there. Our neighborhood is totally clear. When I got to work, a woman who lives 15 minutes away (her kids are in our school district) and she said it was a solid sheet of ice where she lives. So, I know what you're saying. My kids are at home and there is NO reason for it.........that I can see.
It's much easier now because my kids are old enough to stay home alone on days like this. I just came home for lunch to find the 3 kids had already eaten and cleaned the kitchen! The house was actually cleaner than when I left here 4 hrs ago. Go figure!

I'm with ya Allisa, let's try an hour or two delay, THEN cancel school. There were quite a few schools that cancelled last night for today.
I guess my bewilderment comes from growing up in MN, where like Leah said, it takes an awful lot to cancel school.

Susan, can I borrow your kids? Seriously, your kitchen was cleaner than when you left? I am sooooo envious!

Our schools are cancelled because the winchill was -20. It is just too dangerous to have kids walk to the bus stop and then wait for the bus. I'm not sure if it's possible to dress for -20.
Another problem is that our schools are old and have the orignial boilers. These old boilers can't adequately heat the schools when it is this cold.
I remember in 1993 or 1994 when the actual temperature was -20. That was c-c-c-cold!!! BRRRRR
Chris
PS..........I never complain when MY school is closed. ;D

Leah, I remember those -70 windchills. We had those here in Michigan as well, and ALL the schools were closed, although I don't recall it being by governor's order. It was that memory that led me to believe the kids might not have school today. My DH couldn't remember it and thought I was nuts, and then, sweet vindication, LOL!
I'm not feeling quite so smug now that they are all at home driving me crazy today.......

Closed here in the UP too.. -20, windchill -45. They canceled our schools for today last night.. now there is planning. As a working mother, I must say, I am not happy with delays. Either have the entire day off or not. Since I started working, the delays are a pain, because where do I take them for the two hours? And how many days can I come in 2 hours late? Okay Whine Whine Whine. Tomorrow will probably be another day off. The reason they call snow days, is because everything is so rural. Children have to wait for the bus (although mine usually sit in the car while we are waiting, Hey I gotta warm it up so I can go to work ) Hugs and stay warm everyone.... Cathy

I get so anxious when the kids are off school especially for snow days. Why is that? I am not anxious during the 3 month summer holiday. Anybody else feel the same way?

I find that I tend to be more anxios at the UNEXPECTED days off....'cause I alredy have my day/schedule planned and it usually doesn't involve keeping kids entertained !! Summer.....well......my day has to factor them in.....so I've already planned AROUND them

MB, See........I think I must either be really weird (shhhh) or very lazy. I get just as excited as the kids do about NO SCHOOL days!!! And, I think it's cause I can get up in the morning and calmly get ready for work with no kids running about, I don't have to worry about helping with homework, and the kids can hang out at home in their underwear if they want............no begging for me to wash their favorite outfit for the next day!! And, sigh....if you read my story about Jordan's teacher, when there is no school I don't have to worry about what some rude teacher might say to my kids! Hmmmmmm, but then there is the concern about the kids not learning a thing! But no, that doesn't make me anxious at all!

Summer....now summer makes me VERY VERY ANXIOUS!!! On the last day of school I put a ticker on my signature for how many days until school starts again. I'm in special education and always loved my summers off. Now I dread them. Something happened to my brain I think, to make me hate them.
